Default another newbie

Hi all,
Firstly the site looks good and full of facts and opinions that I will try and read through.
I'm looking at buy a bash buggy style electric rc and would like peoples opinions.
I've been driving (just for fun) rc's for about 15years on and off but mainly small cars like x-mods.
I did own a thunder tiger nitro touring car (1/10 I think) about 10 years ago and yes it was good but I'm thinking about electric this time.
I have been looking at the thunder tiger mt4 g3 but stocks are limited. Also its a wee bit over my price range.
I'm hoping to spend about £150-200 ($250).
So some help on what other people use and like would be good.
I hope I've given enough info for people to help.

Welcome aboard!

Don't know what pricing looks like over there, but here, $250 won't get you a whole lot (at least not new). For a quality electric kit, I'd say $400 is about minimum when you figure battery cost as well. Could get out a little cheaper with a brushed motor.

That Thunder Tiger MT4 is more common as the Associated Rival MT here, and it's a nice truck.

Do you have a scale in mind?
Vehicle type?
2 or 4 wheel drive?

Not sure on the current exchange rates. But might have to up the budget a bit.
I'm thinking either 1/10 or 1/8 scale.
Would like a buggy/monster truck type vehicle and I'm not sure about 2wd or 4wd.

Just checked exchange rate and £250 = $400 roughly. So that's my budget.
Don't mind getting second hand if the right equipment comes up at a good price.
Also forgot to say I would like a RTR but wouldn't be against a kit.

Zippy,

Are you just looking to bash the car or truck? If so then it's really hard to be a Traxxas product. A Slash, Stampede or Rustler all make great bashers. The Slash and Stampede are both available in 2WD and 4WD models.

You can easily get into any of those cars for $400

With a budget of $400 for a 1/8 or 1/10 general purpose electric runner/basher, I'd be looking at these two:

http://www.teamassociated.com/cars_a...oLite_4x4/RTR/

http://ofna.com/ultralx2e-rtr.php

Both of those are factory RTR brushless vehicles. The Prolite is right at $400 and comes with a battery, the LX2e is a lttle less, but requires battery.

I'm actually more than likely going to pick up a Prolite soon myself. The LX2e isn't on my list, but that's because I already have an Ultra LX Comp.

Just been looking at some videos of all the cars you have mentioned and I like the look of the traxxas rustler.

Just remember that 2WD stadium trucks require a lot more skill to drive well, and simply don't agree with rough or loose tracks. I have a track in my back acreage, and while the Losi Mega Baja and OFNA Ultra LX Compr do awesome, it's a very difficult run with my RC10GTs (same class as Rustler) or my 2wd buggies.

Indeed, the power of 1/8th combined with the versatility derived from the sheer size of the platform makes it by far a more useful RC. The LX2e is right on your budget limit, and will likely need a few bucks of extras (as is the nature of all RTR vehicles) within the first few weeks, but it really is so much car for your money, consider that most 1/8th electric buggies are over $400 just for a chassis (not even rolling).

Looks to be basically the same truck, except the MT has double the shock absorbers and bigger tires. As always, the MT is probably a better choice for just bashing, but the very things that make it a better basher - the heavier suspension and larger tires - will hinder performance on the track .

As a perfect example, my MGB and Ultra Comp are both 1/8 scale, but the MGB has 7" tires and massive shocks. It handles flying across an open field or bashing through rocks and sticks better, but is not as responsive, nimble or stabil on a course.

Don't think I be on many tracks (I'm not even sure if there are any near me).
So you think for a fun bash truck the Maverick strada MT will do me.

Probably, though I know absolutely nothing about it. Price & appearance indicate to me that it's probably a rebranded HSP product, which can range in quality from decent (Redcat) to basically junk (Exceed). As such, before ordering, it would be prudent to research these particular products a bit. Less expensive stuff is always caveat emptor; you may get a lot of bang for your buck, or you might be throwing money away.

Parts availability should be a factor in your decision as well.A cheap brand x vehicle might seem to be a good deal until you break an a-arm and either can't source one or have to wait 3-4 weeks to get it from an overseas supplier.

As luck would have it. I only live about 20-30mins away from modelsport which seems to do maverick spares.
I think a trip to the store and a conversion with a member of staff might be order to see what they recommend.

Yeah, good idea. Always good to check with your local hobby shop (LHS) to see what they stock. Having a shop nearby for those "Crap, I just need....." moments is really convenient. But as stated, do some more research on reliability, and availability of "upgraded parts". One advantage Traxxas has over some others is that after-market suppliers like RPM and Pro-Line make "hop-up" parts that are tougher than stock. Buying a brand that has no aftermarket support or upgraded parts may mean replacing stock parts with stock parts over and over again.

Finally purchased a car.
In the end I got a hpi mini recon off ebay.
Seller posted it as nearly new only used a couple of times.
I only paid just over £50 including p+p.
The idea is to start on this and move up to hopefully a thunder tiger mt4 g3.
also can pass the recon down to my 4 year old son
