Default Best Off-road Car for 9 year Old

Looking to get my nine year old son a rc car for Chrsitmas. He gets frustrated with the toy cars that you get at the store. They don't run in the grass, he can't jump them and they break all the time.

Which one should I get. The budget is about $150.

Thanks!

those are around $150

they should work in grass (can't say as grass is different by regions)

There is also the evader that is widley popular (it has almost a cult like following )

Also if don't mind a tad smaller vaterra kemorah,m and kalahari are around $120ish on ebay.

Outside those there isn't a hell of a lot in that price range that I can think of

Best is very subjective. I am not a big car guy, so I have limited exp with all that is out there. I can comment on two cars I have. One is well out of the price range. It is a Revo 3.3. The other is close. It was on sale for $199.99 and is $220.00 in the store. If you watch the sales and sign up for the discount emails, might be able to get it for less.

Here is a brushed motor nimh version.

They make a buggy version too

My steering servo broke. I can not blame the servo. My crash was really hard. I did replace it with this one.

Better charger

Of course you may want more batteries

There are a lot of cars out there. I have this one and beat it pretty hard and it runs pretty well. I have Hobby People in my city so parts support is not a problem. My brother and brother in law have one too. We raced each other most of the day on Thanks Giving. Went through many batteries. I need a few parts, not because they failed, but I drove the car full throttle into the edge of a 3/4 piece of ply wood. I bent them back into sort of shape and kept racing.

If you have soft sandy dirt, the stock tires might work well. They were pretty slippery for us. My brother and I have a set of the Gladiators and a second set of stock wheels.

ECX torment. $150 on ebay. Waterproof, Ready to run, decent electronics, 25mph on stock battery, durable. Capable of running on dirt, short grass and still fun on pavement. Leans in the turns like the full sized trucks do.

Buzz.
Buzz, thanks for the advise. I think I'm leaning toward the
DHK Raz-R 1/10 4WD Stadium Truck w/Ni-MH Battery

they have it for $159 on sale which is right on budget. I think I'll pick up a few extra batteries as well. I think the boy will enjoy it.

The ECX Torment looks great also. Now I'm not sure as they're about the same price.

The ECX Torment was out of stock at Horizon, but I pickup up one on E-bay for $169. In the end I thought that car looked like a blast and I liked that it was supported by Horizon Hobby and came with a Spektrum radio. Horizon is great to deal with and getting parts and service is great with those guys.

Thank you all for the advice!

Sounds like you will have a ton of fun. Not sure you now this, it is a very closely guarded secret. Cars and trucks have a way of multiplying. You start with one, then before you know it you have two, then you are not sure how but you are moving stuff around to make room for your third one. You think to your self, where did these come from?

With Hobby People on the way to and from work I can stop by and get parts. So that is easy for me. Not so easy for you when you have to order them.

Here is a review of the Wolf brushless. Might need to get Dad one to race with? HHMMMM
