Default Looking for inexpensive r/c car for son

I hope this isn't a totally ridiculous question but my husband and I would like to get my 8 year old son a r/c car for Christmas for around $40. I'm getting the impression that this website is more for serious remote controllers (?). Just thought I'd see if anyone had any advice or suggestions. Thanks.

Yes it is more for the hobby grade RC cars not the toy grade. Yet there will still be a lot of people who will try to help.

There are a lot of the smaller RC toys out there.

The problem with most toy grade cars is there are no parts and when it breaks, it is pretty much just tossed out.

This is a little over double what you listed for price, but there is full parts support for this one. It might be a bit fast for him though? Not sure how much room you have?

The difference between a man and a boy? The price of his toys

Thanks, Buzz! I'll look into those links you gave me. It's mostly an indoor toy and occasionally out in our driveway. Maybe when he gets older we'll spring for a more expensive model with parts support. Thanks again for your help!

yeah, the ones we play with can easily have that much in nuts and screws.

this looks to be pretty decent for the money http://www.target.com/p/new-bright-1...lot=large_1_17
the car has an internal rechargeable battery which will save you a small fortune. the car itself should be smaller than some cellphones which makes it great for indoors but it wont do too well outside.

or if you really love him http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...e-Bind-N-Drive

Bump up to $70 and pick this hobby grade rc vehicle. Fun for the whole family and comes with many pro features like a 2.4GHZ radio. Better than every toysrus car out there. Highly recommended and comes in 4 colors.

These are out of stock. Does anyone else carry these? I am having trouble finding them elsewhere.

These are on the same site, just a tad bit more. I have no first hand information on if they are good or not.

My local hobby store, and Tower Hobbies has gotten a bunch of these http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...FQaUfgodin0A6g

A buggy, a monster truck or a short course truck RTR for $99. Supposed to have replacement parts on the walls as of this writing.

If your limit is really $40, then there are only 2 RC's I can recommend:

I just bought the radio shock Xmods 1/16 buggy.
The "special edition" kit is $40 (on sale)
It comes with a upgrade motor and upgrade 4wd kit.

Unlike most toy rc's, it has proportional steering and throttle.

It's speed is only a bit faster than most toy rc's. But with the 4wd upgrade installed (which is easy to do) it can drive over packed dirt or even some slightly bumpy terrain.
It is a bit large for driving in the house, as the turning radius is a bit large. But good for outside on the driveway....or maybe in a larger basement.

The second is the Miasto rock crawler. It is not fast at all....but rather it is 4wd with locked diffs, large grippy tires and a lot of suspension travel. It doesn't have proportional controls, but is pretty sturdy and can drive a lot of places other toy rc's simply cannot. And it can be fun indoors just by using household items to make your own crawler course.
These run a bit more online, but are $30 at walmart. Again, not fast, but with the 4 wheel drive and lots of suspension travel it can drive a lot of places. Ive wrapped mine with saran wrap to drive in the snow. Ive taken it threw short grass. dirt and such is no problem. You can find reviews of these on youtube.

of the 2, I actually like the rock crawler better. The xmod buggy does have some optional upgrades you can get later (9.6v battery and truck body) but simiply cant drive as many places as the crawler can. But either of them is the best of the toy RC's currently available today.
