I bought a Yokomo recently and began buying parts for it. It became an obsession to the point where I didn't feel complete until I had every hop up out there. It felt like a void I had to fill. I found myself up till early hours of the morning searching - nay, scouring - the internet for parts.

It's all felt like a drunken haze. I "woke up" recently and went to calculate just how much I've spent in the last few months...around $1500. And this is probably nothing to some of you out there.

I feel sick and ashamed at what I've done. And I'd do it all again.

As I type this I'm already thinking of buying backup parts to hop ups that I already have and are still in perfect working order. I'm also planning on buying a whole host of accessories that provide no tangible benefit to my car. If RC parts came in powdered form I'd be in a world of hurt. This is not a good hobby for anyone with OCD.

What about the rest of you sickos? I'm sure I'm not the only one, being relatively new to all of this. Tell me about your sordid tales so I can deflect some of my own shame onto you, you sick, sick excuse for a human being.

well i always feel bad after buying something RC. lol at one time i had well over 100 lipos 40+ planes. at one stage in my obsession i had a lot of RC cars. put it this way up until a few months ago i had around 40 to 50 but at my worst it was a lot more. lol at one point i had 4 submarines but i never even took them to the local lake.

i will say that most of my stuff was second hand. also i had 3 traxxas 1/10th summit's they take up a lot of room.

extra i got a blade 350qx quad a month or so ago. and now i have 4 quads. i can see this getting nasty. lol

I understand the hop up obsession. For me it started innocently enough with a Tmaxx that I thought was cool because of the EZ start and other things. Then I started breaking stuff and discovered stronger aftermarket parts. Break an arm, go rpm. Now it breaks bulkheads so go aluminum there. And so it went until I had RPM arms and the rest of the truck aluminum. By this point I needed shocks and more power so big block conversion time. One that was done I had quite a few extra parts and acquired some other parts and started building another truck. But this truck can't be bone stock, I know all it's faults by now and want to fix them.


And so started years of buying used trucks and really good used and new parts deals on eBay to build trucks. I built some fairly stock trucks and sold them for profit but I also built another 2 big block trucks for myself and kept the best parts for my builds. My "original" truck's final iteration had about $2000 into it, not including parts I swapped out. It never had UE on it but it did have lots of HCR goodies and a sweet modded Novarossi .28 in it. In total I built at least a dozen Tmaxx's. I sold all of those Tmaxx's and swore I'd never build another one because they require so much. Then I came across a set of FLM Hybrid bulkheads and a 3905 chassis with transmission for a price I couldn't refuse. So I ended up building another rpm arm and all aluminum Maxx except for the chassis and trans case. This one came out really nice and a lot cheaper than previous Tmaxx builds but I still lost money on it. So I've sworn off the Maxx platform yet again. Funny thing is I do still have a few ideas floating around in my head I never got to do. Somebody would have to give me a decent roller to start with though, I'm not paying for another Maxx.


My saving grace was finally getting into the LST platform. There's not many hop ups available for the LST and it also doesn't need very much as it a tough truck to start with. Of course it's personalized a bit and has a crazy Castle 1717 on 6s because I saved so much money not having to hop it up!

Felt the same way after I bought a Merv, and all the parts to make it not suck(along with a few other RC's).

Hell one project I'm working on now for how much I spent in parts, and tools to make it after I figured it out I could have bought another SCX10 with all the electronics needed to make it run, and I'm not even done yet... I'm stalled on the project since I'm kinda broke, and can't order the parts I need to finish it. Scary thing is I didn't even need the majority of the main parts as I had over half the parts already.

Well I spend two years building and buying every conseavible part possible for a ta06 chassis I had.. And as soon as it was built to be point were I couldn't do a thing more with it.. I got bored of it and sold it. I am now enjoying my next project and have already bought bits and pieces for it to change and modify even though it is a very good chassis to start with.

This is a "SMALL" part of my inanity, I mean collection I was up to 57 ready to fly planes, 5 helicopters 2 cars. I have trimmed my collection from a high of 177 planes down to 65 now. I still have (2) RD6000, (2) RDS8000, (2) 9x, (1) iT4, countless RTR radio's

Try taking a helicopter that sells for $29.00 for the full kit, instead, buy all of the aluminum after market parts to build you own from hop up parts at about $700 plus you still need the rx, servos, motor, ESC and gyro. So yes, I know what it is like. The crazier you are, the better you get

try custom building. i'm currently pondering how the hell i'm going to get the money to renovate my shop. as of now i have a cheap bench top drill press, a large floor-standing drill press, a bench grinder, a harbor freight welder, a dremel and some other misc tools. total i have in it is about $500 and that's only because a lot of it was my great grandpa's (it's his old work shop) and the floor standing was my grandpa's (died last year). buying everything i have new would set you back at least $1000. i'm now looking at $200 vises, $1000 oxy/acetylene torch with tanks, $400+ soldering setup (3 different soldering stations plus some random bits and pieces), hand tools galore, 2 grand+ in mills and lathes (cnc AND manual), storage up the wazoo and i dont even want to think about how much the new wiring would cost. if i decked out my shop like i want to, i'd have over $15k invested before i even buy materials to build with.

now speaking realistically, i'll probably spend $5-6k over the next 2-5 years, as cash allows. tool box loaded with hand tools (probably craftsman unless i win the lottery, in which case snap-on epic 144" here i come!), manual mill and lathe, that soldering setup, a cheaper torch setup and some other tidbits. custom building costs most upfront, but after you have the tools you can build just about anything for as little as a quarter of what something from tower or amain will cost you.

Oh Mini's are just as bad if not worse than a Maxx. It's great that you can do just about anything to them fairly cheaply, but the variety of parts taunt you even more!

@Cumquat Custom building is actually what my modding has morphed into. I have similar tools in my garage but you can still get a lot done. Custom roll cages, brackets, extended chassis, motor mounts, etc. It started with my big block Tmaxx's and getting the mix of parts to work together. After swearing off Maxx trucks, I still had the modding bug. A Rustler was my next victim, it got a custom extended chassis with roll cage to make one of the earliest LCG Slash conversions out there. Then I went 1/8 scale. I converted 3 old Ofna LX buggies in fairly rapid succession with my own motor mounts and battery boxes. Then a couple conversions on truggies and another couple buggies. I had to do a SCT conversion on one of the buggies because a straight up brushless conversion was getting a little boring! My LST XXL is all my own custom conversion, no bought parts, all made by me. I ended up doing 2 more LST's after that one. Yup I'm definitely still addicted to modding and custom building rc's. I'm just glad I don't have a lathe and a mill. I want both so badly but I know I'll never stop then.

I have an engine and a bunch of parts to finally build the homemade 1/5 I've always wanted to do too. Rc is on a bit of a hold right now though. Been working on the house and my 1:1 1967 Camaro needs some love too.

i plan to build a set of ROAR spec vehicles to race once i have the mill and lathe. completely my own design using some things i thought of years ago and some i havent thought of yet. hardest part i foresee will be making the diffs. i'm already dreading it and it's not going to happen for at least 3 years!

Bought an airplane kit, and got sick of it at step 3, had 2 helicopters(they were pretty cheap) crashed once, and never bothered to repair lol
Hell I got a SCT sitting here for over half a year and have yet to bother to put the electronics in.

Ambitious plans. Especially the making of the diff gears, machining steel and then hardening. Then again if I had the equipment of be building some multiculinder 4 stroke engines. Albeit probably with some existing parts just my own crankshaft and block. I'd love a twin .52 4 stroke powered LST

the actual gear cutting doesnt seem that hard but getting proper ratio and mesh is going to be a pain. i would pay $2000 for a 4 stroke V-twin 8th scale with proper strengthening to take the power. the savage flux can do standing backflips, that thing would wheel hop!

i learnt the hard way. i had 9 with every upgrade. i still have a very nice 18R and from memory the only upgrades i found worth keeping was a carbon chassis and metal gears. everything else just bent or got worn out very quick.

the only downside of having a lot of stuff is you cannot really get to know how to fly or drive any one vehicle. ok 2 downsides. lol half modding a car then forgetting what on earth you were doing.

AHHH hell. I need to do a better job of proof reading I was up it "15" ready to fly helicopters.

It is to bad what I have hanging on the walls is not worth 10% of what I paid for it.

Every one has a vice, some drink, some go to nudie bars, gamble and so on. We do R/C end of story.

Yep all sounds about right to me. Hell I just spent a shiz load updating all my indoor racing stuff last fall for this winters indoor oval season. Fixed up an existing sprint car, purchased another sprint car for a different class, purchased a 1/10 late model and support for it. New lipos, tires, foams, traction compound, motor, esc, etc..... and than I only went racing indoors once all winter. Damn......glad that's behind me. Purchased a bunch of stuff for my bashing rigs between racing seasons. Savage parts, hyper 7 parts, 1/5 scale parts. Now I am spending getting ready for the upcoming outdoor season. Just got my new 1950kv Trinity D8 for the e-L8model, and ordered new lipos. I made a big list and have been checking things off as I can afford to purchase............it's what we do.

Nearly $3k on a crawler, 9 months to build it to perfection, one run, decided I didn't like crawling after all. lol. Its for sale if anyone is interested in a world class comp crawler (seriously, take it to the worlds tomorrow) for silly discount because I just had to build the best of the best. The time that went just into the setup is phenomenal. After this I am taking a break from RC purchases for a LOONG time.
