New to RC and RCU
Hello all,
Just wanted to say hi and look forward to learning and discussing everything about all RC. As I'm new I'm looking for some help deciding a starting point. I have read the beginners sticky and am looking for some extra help and opinions. I currently own an old electric 1/10 buggy, that was bought when i was younger from radio shack. I know its not much but its what i have now. I'm looking to build my first car/truck. When I decided to jump into RC I wanted to build a nitro car, but as I've read the forums it seems they're not recommended or popular. I still think I would like to build nitro unless its really recommended that I don't. So I'm looking for a good starting truck mostly for bashing, with the possibility of racing later. Any advice is much appreciated!
Thank you for all your help.

Ok, I really appreciate all of your help. I still think i would like to build so I guess nitro is out of my budget. Do you have any suggestions for kits in my budget range?

Welcome to RCU! We hope you stick around, as you will learn a lot. For racing and bashing, a short course truck is great. If it doesn't have to be a kit, you can get a 2WD Slash and buy an LCG chassis for racing later. If you want it to be a kit, you will need to buy a SC10 and all the related electronics, which is a lot of money.
RTR
Slash; http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...HeQRoCWYfw_wcB
Battery; http://www.atomikrc.com/collections/...ith-uni-plug-1
Charger; http://www.atomikrc.com/collections/...attery-charger
Suggested Upgrades
Rear Bearing Carriers; http://www.amain.com/rc-cars/rpm-tra...FJPBoCyeLw_wcB
Toolkit (makes working on car so much easier); http://www.amain.com/rc-cars/team-as...sc1655/p200184
LCG Kit (once you are ready for racing); http://www.amain.com/rc-cars/traxxas...ra5830/p272507
Before someone says to not start racing on a 2WD Slash, I raced on one for a good 4 years when I started racing. It is a great starter vehicle and will upgrade with you as you get better.

a bit over budget but it'll compete at the club level with no problem and aught to take a decent beating. part support is abundant too. some aspects can be cheapened if needed but end product and experience will be notably inferior.

Ok ok last thing guys, hope you don't mind helping out a newbie. So the last questions is should I start with brushless motor, or do you think i should begin with a brushed motor and upgrade it when more experienced? Thanks for all the help thus far!

agreed. brushless has too many advantages to effectively waste money on brushed for your purpose. if it was for a 7 year old or if you had an incredibly strict budget, then i'd say go for it but your budget is large enough and you seem old enough to handle the power right away or have the knowledge to turn down the power to a suitable level.

If you have any inklings to race something, and before purchasing a kit, I would call/email the track that you would be frequenting the most to see what classes are being run and are popular. That will save you from a lot of possible aggravation later.

the setup i posted earlier costs a little more than i realized but it gets you a kit. switch the b5 for this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFBDR&P=0 and use the pertinent coupon code here http://www.towerhobbies.com/coupon_codes.html and you're looking at just under $400 shipped.

Take a look at OFNA or Cen Racing. I screwed up and bought a Redcat Backdraft, and although the buggy is durable for the price as well as plenty fast, getting parts are a pain as you have to buy them strictly over the Internet. I'm willing to bet you can find an OFNA rtr and still be able to get the glow igniter and starter kit for $400.

Agree with you there Guff. I think there is an unwritten rule that you must tell what you are getting after coming to RCU; asking for some help with decision making....Just kidding.

Haha sorry, I decided to go with with cumquat and got the tamiya dark impact kit. It should be arriving on Monday and hopefully having a blast soon there after! I keep you posted on how everything goes for me!
