RE: Building a dirt track
Hi, here's my track> not much but good enough for me. I used a rototiller to break up the ground then raked the grass/dirt into lane separators. Twice a year I rototill it again to get rid of the weeds but after that the weeds stay away pretty good. I used the excess dirt from rototilling to build up jumps and corners.

RE: Building a dirt track
I like to know how to make the obstacles. Like the dimensions, what height, angle etc. We want to have some table tops, rumbles etc. We are running 1/8 scales and some 1/5 too.

RE: Building a dirt track
What is the average width of an 8th scale track as far as the driving lane goes? I have about 119' x 90' layed out for the track in my back yard and 9' width on the driving lane... is that to big or to small??? or it is just right?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Depends on how many people are racing on your track.
Our track down here in Antwerpen(Belgium) is abour 3meters wide(which is huge). About the width of the shuvel from a bulldozer.

RE: Building a dirt track
I"m working on a small track in the back yard for my son and I to bash about in. 1/10th SC trucks.
Lanes need to be about 5 feet wide (most club tracks are 6 to 8 feet depending on scale). 4 feet is a bit tight -doable but technical and it's too easy to run out of the lane.
I'm still experimenting wtih jumps and can't say there's any real formula for them. If the approach is too steep you bash into it instead of run over it. I'm running stock traxxas 2ws slash and how far/high you go seems more about the speed you hit the jump than anything else - hit it fast and you go higher than if you hit it slow. Even a 4 inch tall bump can send the truck 1 foot plus in the air and 4 feet along the track before it touches down again. You almost need a 'lip' at the takeoff point to get good air or else a *lot* of speed.
I've got some dug out but so far every chance I've had to run the track the condistions have been different - dry (loose dirt), wet (sticky) or frozen (best control acttually, until my fingers went numb)
I'm about 1/2 way to where I want to be but most likely won't finish things till spring - too hard to manually dig frozen ground.

RE: Building a dirt track
Sounds good then. Yea I just had the yard weeded out and now comes the fine raking and then the build... hopefull we will be done by the end of January. Is there like and addidive that is safe to use to make the dirt harder? Some places use glue but I am not sure which kind. Also we are in the high desert and it is getting cold here so I may have to wait until spring to break in my new buggy I got for my Birthday/chrismas/aniversary. Will post pics when done. Thanks everone for your input.

RE: Building a dirt track
If you have the space 8 - 9 feet wide is fine. Remember to make the lanes furthest away from the driver's stand about a 1/4 to a 1/3 wider than the rest of the lanes on the track. Don't know about how safe it is, but you could use pot ash.
The best thing I've found is WATER and compaction! But it's a fine balance. Do you want HARD or do you want Lomey? A track that's too hard tends to eat cars.....[:@]

I read some places add gypsum to the dirt to firm it up. clay is the best and we have a lot of that here. too much and when its' wet you have a greasy gooey mess (depending on how packed it it).

RE: Building a dirt track
I've just started building a track, i just mowed the grass really short today to get a feel for the area size and am wondering if lanes that are 4ft wide will be big enough for one 1/10th scale buggy, or if i should make then 5ft or 6ft?
