Building a dirt track
Does anyone have any info or links I can use to help be build a test race-track in my field?
I'm just curious what people are using to build up the jumps (e.g. piping or solid dirt) and what equipment is needed for creation and maintenance.

RE: Building a dirt track
whats the cheapest thing to use for the rails? Ive seen lots of tracks with what looks like heavy rubber dryer exhaust hose.
I have a large farm with lots of open pasture land and a tractor. Maybe I'll set something up this summer.

RE: Building a dirt track
I used 4 in. drain pipe from Home Depot about $45/100 ft. I staked it down with 10 in. spikes. The track was a pain to make, but well worth it!!!

RE: Building a dirt track
I built a dirt track in my backyard, and the only motorized tool i needed was a tiller. Once the ground is chewed up, moving it is easy. Just use a wheelbarrow. I used dirt for jumps and the natural terrain for the structure. I dug down the corners and used the dirt for the banks.

RE: Building a dirt track
Nice track, but i have a question, what is a good width for a track for 1/8 scale trucks and buggies?
Also I don't have a tiller or a tractor, so how should i break up the ground?
Thanks for the info

RE: Building a dirt track
[:-]Now I want to build a track too. Hope the parents will approve of me tearing up part of the yard[sm=frown.gif]. We've got 5 acres and a tractor with bucket-- so if they let me, it should be sweet. I like that figure-8 layout! I'll be running 1/10 and 1/18 scale electric. I have access to clay and top soil, what would be best? A good mix, or what? I'd like my jumps to be pretty solid.
We have a tiller too, whoever suggested that-- good idea! I wouldn't have thought of that [sm=thumbup.gif]
Should I make it about 10 feet wide? any suggestions? thanks

RE: Building a dirt track
heres my figure 8. I never finished it but maybe some other time. You should make something technical like my above pic. my tri-oval and figure 8 were good but get boreing after a while. try these-

RE: Building a dirt track
if you make a figure 8, don't make it a perfect 8. make it a little crooked here and there. Also make it as big as you want. i'd say 6 feet is good for 1/10 scale. Good size for two or three cars.
If you guys want more ideas go to the 1/18 forum and look for "my backyard tri-oval" lots of ideas in there.

RE: Building a dirt track
Cool. thanks for the input everyone! The only bad thing about the area I want to build is that it floods typically once or twice every year. It's in a low area. We put in some drains last year(water is than piped into our lake), but they can only do so much. I guess I will just have to go into this prepared to do a complete rebuild every time it floods... I'm thinking about just clearing it and making a big (really wide) oval and from there I could make it a figure eight, or a more "technical" course. again, thanks for the suggestions.

Just so your clear, that is not my neighborhood track. I don't know where its at or where I got the pic from. The last pic is not mine though.
That would be cool though to put one in the middle of your neighborhood so everyone could come out whenever.
I'd let neighbors come in my backyard, but......you know.......................NO!
not gonna go there. If you know what I mean.
