Default Tips for running a Nitro in cold weather?

Well everyone, it's getting close to winter and fall and it's going to be getting cold. I tried running the other day when it was about 50-60 degrees and I could barely keep it running. It's probably going to get down to 20-40 degrees F and I'm looking for any tips to keep a nitro engine running.

Thanks,
Tom

I've seen guys put a sock on thier cooling head, you just need to cut a sock down till it fits the cooling head, but be carefull of your temps.

I cut the bottom out of a pepsi can. Kinda rattles around a little bit... Haven't tried it in the winter but I anticipate it'll fall off. The sock is a good idea, though.

,I tried the sock Idea here in North Dakota the sock got snow on it and melted making it wet which deafetted the purpose Today i am going to try the pop cam cut to protect the cranc case from the 20 deg wearher it should barely fit on theRedcat Avalanche XP.23 head might have to cut some holes for some air though Thanks for the ideas.I broke in the engine perfectly in an indoor shop. The snowdoes notseem to effect the electronics and needs to be blown off after the engine cools before taking in doors.

Hi Pede187, down here in Belgium the temp at the moment is around -10°c, I wrap my cylinder head in alu foil but warm up the engine with a hear dryer first, then start it above the engine of a friends car (real car). Once it's running you should'nt have any problems.
Good luck and have fun.
By the way, MERRY X-MAS.

you can go to autozone and get some exhaust wrap, havent tried it yet, but im going to when i get my evader.

i have not had issues running in hot/cold/wet/dry with any engine, i usually run a hotter plug in the cold.

Use tin foil around the cooling head. Just make sure it doesn't overheat.

I've run quite a bit in winter, but never used any sort of covering on the cyl head. However I don't run below freezing (0degC or 32degF) as my fingers get too numb for good transmitter control.

Really, running in cold weather isn't much different than using an extra large cyl head in summer. If the tune is right, the heat in the combustion chamer will be the same summer or winter. Just the fins will be colder in winter. I've measured at the glow-plug and don't see much of a temp difference between hot and cold weather.

Where it might pay to be careful is when you're breaking-in an engine and you want to build some heat as engine parts may be too tight when cold.
