RE: SH .28 P3
very easy,
take off the cooing head, pullstart and backplate.
take out sleeve, pison w/con rod. Put new piston on con rod and put back together. Its really easy.

RE: SH .28 P3
just be careul when you remove the piston pin clip...its very small and can take off on ya...and near impossible to find if they do....make sure you have ample work space...going back together I have been lucky and usually lay the clip on the piston and kind of roll it in with my thumb...and I usually keep a spare on hand just in case..lol

RE: SH .28 P3
Does anyone know how long these piston/sleeves last? I have a SH 28 P3 that I took care of properly and didn't abuse, but only got about 2.5 gallons through it. The compression is gone. I thought about changing the sleeve and piston, but not sure if it's worth it. I would use it as a back up bashing engine. The rest of the engine is fine. Any comments about the longevity of this piston/sleeve combo?

RE: SH .28 P3
it really depends, 2 and 1/2 gallons isnt that bad, there is no set amount to an engine, depends on driving habbits, how lean/rich the engine was run, how the break in was done, there are too many variables to say but they do last long, are very reliable and put out decent power.

RE: SH .28 P3
like any other engines you want to get them to atleast 200 as fast as possible...want to run no hotter then 260 really...plus you have to count that it will cool a bit while u take readings so alot for that...ya also want to make sure it has no air leaks...and put to bdc as soon as possible after its ran...its a learning curve..

RE: SH .28 P3
The AIR FILTER is EXTREMELY important as well.
I run Off Road in So California and the conditions are Extremely dusty and the Dust is Extemely fine particles.
I ruined my first SH .28 engine(piston/sleeve) in only 2 track outings running a PERFECT stock air filter.....
My engine sucked fine dust through my properly oiled Stock air filter. I actually Found a Trail of dust coming through my filter and down the Carb throat....
The engine still functions, but wont hold a tune and has lost a LOT of compression due to a ruined Sleeve...
If you run in the dirt or at the track, you MUST run a properly oiled DUAL air filter, (the stockie is probably a Single Element filter with a plastic dust cover). I now run a THIRD dry dust blocker on my Track engines. See link.

The people I have met at my local track tell me I shouldn't feel too bad, cuz "It happens to everyone.....ONCE."
They tell me that proper air filter maintenance is the Difference between an engine that Lasts 2 Gallons and an engine that lasts 8 - 10 gallons...
