New Toy, HPI Baja 5T 1/5 scale Gasoline Trophy Truck *updated*
I'm sure many of you are aware HPI recently released a new gas car, the Baja 5T. It's based off the same chassis and drivetrain as the 5B with some minor modifications.
Retail is around $1300, I managed to pick it up for quite a bit less
New features include:
New wheels and larger diameter tires
New truck body
Adjusted internal gearing
Upgraded shock components
New front bumper
Upgraded roll cage
Large side guards
Pullstart guard
Upgraded Steering servo
Same engine as the Baja 5B SS, CY26RC
Upgraded high flow muffler - though I'll get a tuned pipe for it
Beefier rear A-arms
And it includes all the hop ups that the SS version of the 5B had over the RTR.
Sorry for the poor picture quality of the pictures, I many take it outside later and take some nicer shots. I'll probably get it running some time this weekend. Note that the 3PM radio shown in the picture is just for scale, it came with a TF10 which I haven't unpacked yet.

Is it just a coincidence that the bodies match that closely or did you purposely paint the Porshe body like that?
Oh, BTW I am jealous and I hate you.

Its a coincidence, the Porsche body is actually an RTR prepainted Kyosho body that came with my FW-06.
They do look nice together though.

I'm an art dealer actually.
As for the 5B, I sold my fancy on road one but I still have my old RTR one.

Art dealer, huh? Sounds fancy. Nevertheless it a nice truck, tell us how she goes. I'm looking at one of these myself, but that is one hefty price tag.[X(]

Quite honestly its needlessly expensive compared to the 5B. If you're budget minded I'd recommend the 5B over the 5T still. The only major differences are cosmetic.

If you know you want a truck now or in the future, go for the 5T out of the chute... The Proline conversion (body, wheels, tires) when it's all said and done will cost $325... Add that to the $850-$900 of a kit or RTR, you are at a hair over $1,200. Add on the really cool bumpers, side guards and other 5T goodies and you are over the cost of the 5T.

Too bad HPI buys the engine from the Chinese CY. I personally would prefer the Zenoah engine. For the price, the CY engine should have made the 5T much cheaper on the shelf. I therefore am not impressed with its price.
Funny how the 5T costs like $1300-1400 USD, I say an FG truck or buggy WITH Zenoah 26cc for like $1300 USD also.
As for teh radio, I already have a high dollar race grade one, so if I ever get into teh market for the 5T, I hope HPI will have made a kit form without electonics. Actually, I would like to see a roller kit so I could skip the CY "Fulie" and get a Zenoah engine instead.

man, that is one beast of a car, i remember seeing one at our LHS near a revo 3.3, totally dwarfed it, now we need a 'side by side' pic of the 5B and the 5T

CY engines are needlessly underrated, most of who have used tons of gassers have had no problems with them. I too perfer Zenoah if given the choice but I'm totally fine with CY.

Im not saying the CY does not perform, It can, especially with the dozens of hop-ups and mods for them. What I'm saying is that HPI should pass the savings to us, the RC fans, because the CY is so much cheaper for them to acquire.

That is true.
I guess for me HPI stuff still feels cheap, I'm used to all the german 1/5s and things. And yeah FGs are getting cheap but by the time you start hopping them up you're pushing the $2000 mark fast.

That is a very nice truck, i too cant see why HPI put the price so high and didnt change anything but the looks from the buggy. Basically its still a buggy with the truck body on it... correct?

I haven't seen one in real life, but I've checked them out pretty thoroughly online and their are several differences from the buggy. A lot of them are small differences, but differences none the less. It looks to me as though the 5T is actually a little tougher than the 5B, but as I said I haven't actually had my hands on one.

The differences are mostly cosmetic. The major difference that would affect the driving experience is the use of new and larger tires. Other than that its body and protection that is new. I do feel that less dust and grime will get into the chassis with the 5T, which is a definite plus. The pullstart is also well protected, the 5B had a huge problem with grass and foliage getting into the pullstart housing.

Here are a couple nicer shots - still not as nice as I want though [:@] I'll keep working at it.

Well, the first attempt at running was a complete failure lol. I drove all the way out to my favorite bashing grounds, and as I yanked the pullstart the bloody handle came right off! The string got sucked into the housing and I didn't bring the appropriate hex tools to dismantle it. Guess I'll give it a shot tomorrow [:@]
