Too bad GM and Chrysler used up all our tax money. We could've helped out California with it. Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Down hereI'm getting 40 hours a week, which I am extreeeeeeemely grateful for, but am having to do auto mechanic work on the side to make ends meet and have a couple bucks left over at the end of the week. And I mean a couple bucks, I normally have 2 to 3 dollars in my account at the end of the week.

All I can say is, thank goodness I work in the carpet industry. Commercial companies replace carpet about every 5 years and now we have some carpet tile that is recyclable. We take the old carpet, throw in some old plastic coke bottles, chop it up, melt it down and turn it into new carpet!

I'm a LAID OFF AND P'D OFF union painter and drywall finisher. Been off for almost a year now, thank God for a few side jobs. There's not much work out there and I'm 40 and would like to get something else. I've been painting for 24 yrs. This must be my mid life crisis, I don't even run them, my son does. I just work on them, set them up, and he races them. LOL!!!!

I'm a  commercial office environments salesperson (19 years and still have a job).  RC relaxes me.  I love to tinker too.    BTW, I had a job when I was 14.  It's sad for me to see the posts where the 14 y/o's don't think they can get a job.  They can earn money.  There's ways.

I work for GOODRICH, landing gear division , formerly B.F. GOODRICH AEROSPACE

The company I worked for built electronics for the de-icing systems for Goodrich. We were told very early in our association with Goodrich not to mention B.F. because they were VERY sensitive about that. I'm guessing one of the members of upper management made that mistake. lol I truely feel for Goodrich now because I've seen the factory where the boards we used to make are being built. I tried teaching the lady that was supposed to learn how to build them but she couldn't have cared less. I can only imagine the RMAs they're getting. As long as their bad boards don't end up on planes it doesn't matter to me.

Whoever started this thread, kudos to ya, it's interesting to see all the diverse classes of people who love rc's. Brings alot of hope, that they're not fading, like some people think. Alot of you guys are lucky to have a job. Like I said earlier I'm a laid off painter and drywall finisher. Looking to go back to school for something else, just can't figure out what. The unions are fading, I'm 40 and really starting to worry. All these posts have given me some ideas, thanks to everyone for contributing. Also for you 14 yr. olds, you can get small jobs, mowing grass, etc. JUST REMEMBER ONE THING PLEASE!!! DON'T DO WHAT I DID AND WAS HAPPY TO GET OUT OF SCHOOL AND PARTY ALL THE TIME. yOU REALLY DO NEED A DEGREE TO GET A GOOD JOB THESE DAYS, SO STICK TO STUDIES AND GET THE MINDSET READY FOR COLLEGE!!!!!!! If I could do it over again I would have went. My Dad told me in 7th grade to get into computers, because that was the new era. I said ya,ya. Should have listened, that was back in'82. Don't learn the hard way, like I did!!!!!

I agree 100%. I chose party, clubs, and girls. Was making good money as a tile and carpet installer/ independant contractor and was doing ok until I got hurt. Now Im a customer service rep. Don't get me wrong they pay good and have great benefits but its not what I want to do. Actually thinking of going back to school to get a degree in business. All you young kids stay in school and if not then aspire to be your own boss or something and become a success. Don't wait for a hand out. There is no better feeling than getting what you want through your own hard work. And you 14yr olds out there. You can get a job. I did it and ended getting my own car without the help of mom or dad. That was a great feeling.

I'm on the sales side of an animal fat processor. Beef tallow and lard used for many applications; the most being food.

Worked in the plant in operations and quality assurance before sales.

When I was 14 I worked for a landscaper cutting grass and laying patio stones.

I'm 25 now, single, been in RC for about 15 years...also like target shooting, fishing, boating, and snowmobiling. And eating and sleeping, of course.

Iam a Mechanical Designer who lost myfull time job a year ago last feb because of over sea's competition. I then went on doing contract Engineering work for Miller Electric (WELDERS) and Marvel Manufacturing (Industrial Band Saws). Now that all of that has dried up,I am doing alot of flying, when I am not Job hunting. You would think that it would be easy to find something having aMechanical Design Degree with ten years ofSolidWorks and AutoCad experience.

Idid all kinds of stuff. Started off in the mid 70's as a microwave tech in the defence area. Then worked in satellite guidance and propulsion for NASA, Took a part time job at a cabinet shop trading my knowledge in Autocad for woodworking lessons, then went on to build sets for TV talk shows and new rooms. (If you watch The Daily Show, or Fox News, we built the furniture). For years I traveled the country as a broadcast engineer for ESPN, Fox, Versus, WWE, ... Anywhere there was live sports, I was there in in the truck. At 51, got tired of never being home and now have a job as a research engineer at a university.

Most of my money was spent on women, booze, and gambling.

The rest I foolishly wasted.

My girlfriend and I (mostly my girlfriend) are thinking of starting a candy company. she's pretty serious about it and has all the proper stuff in line. Would be more of a hobby for us, we're both well employed and don't need the extra cash, but we do have extra cash to spare as capital. Would be fun.
