I'm sort of new at this. All the receivers I've looked at have the battery plugging into one of the channels. Does this mean if I need 4 channels I'll need a 5 channel receiver or how does it work out.

Some manufacturers have separate battery input on the receiver. Some do not. Either way, the receiver/servos are normally powered through a BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuitry)...like an internal one in an ESC (electronic speed control).

If you use a speed controller BEC it will power the rx through the throttle channel wire.

If you use a separate feed you can Y harness it to an existing channel or plug it into any open slot.

Personally I would Y the battery to the throttle channel.

Sorry for the late reply to your question. If you have an Airtronics 4ch RX like mine all you need is a Y harness and it tells you this in the manual for MT-4.
You can find these on line. You just have to pay attention to the polarity of the plug that goes into the RX.
