Default Waco Texas Dirt Oval Racing

I took a trip up I-35 to Waco Tx to check out a new indoor dirt oval track. Very nice facility. Awesome hard packed clay track. Great traction and its very smooth.

Here is the video from the mains. Nothing fancy just a camera mounted high to see as much of the track as possible.

That's cool, we're trying to get the sprints started in our area now that we have an oval.

The ovals are hot right now, drawing a lot of interest.

Its blown up here over the summer. Before that we used to have to go all the way to the Dallas area to run dirt oval. Thats about 3.5 to 4 hours each way. Now there are 4 tracks within an hour or so. The one in Waco is the best so far. The Austin track is coming along but its not as good of a surface as the Waco track. Its outdoor so its going to be different. There is also a pavement oval starting up in Austin. And a track in Killeen that is being built. The cars are pretty cheap. Mostly 1:10 electric and gas trucks with conversion kits and different bodies. They run 1/8 sprints in Abilene but I hear there is not much interest in 1/8 scale anymore. The 1:10 outlaw sprints have pretty much wiped the 1/8 scale out here. I didn't think it would take that much skill to go in circles but I was wrong. The set-up is totally different than anything you might have learned running off-road or on-road. And on the short tracks you are always running in traffic or a pack of cars. I'm really into drag racing but I'm really getting into my sprint car too. Dragsters and sprint cars kinda go together don't they Anyways here is some more video from the 1st qualifier. Different camera position and a tighter shot so you can see the cars better.

Yeah, making a car go left is different. We're just now learning about setups, what a blast.

That short track looks like a real challange with the traffic. The trouble we're going to have with the learning curve on ours,is the speed we'll be carrying into the turns (30-40 mph). It will require a box of spare parts to make it thru the weekend until we all get our stuff dialed in,including our skills.

Seems the hardest thing to get thru your head,is that you don't need to pass everyone on the first lap. Green,green,green,...crash!!

Its different for me. Ive been doing drag racing exclusivly for the last couple of years. But that might be a good thing because the set-up is so different from what you'd think it would be from running off-road or on-road cars. I managed to take 4th in my 3rd oval race with a big field so I'm feeling pretty good about my sprint car. Finally got it to push and now its just a matter of turning up the power until it gets out of control. I have my clutch set really soft and the gearing higher than normal. That has kept me from doing a lot of wrecking and spinning out getting on the gas exiting the turns. I'm going up to Dallas soon to run on a big track. Both the tracks closest to me are about this size. Within 10 feet of each other as far as driveline is concerned. Its hard to keep all the traffic in view. These cars dart quickly into your path and just about the time you start to do something to get out of the way they are gone. I've been trying to get into a good pace the first 3 minutes. Wait for people to start getting sloppy and then press for a position. The people that race in Waco are clean drivers and you can go toe to toe without getting hacked. I noticed that about the sprint class when I went to see them race before buying a car. Here is some more video I took last weekend. Larger fields and a lot more action.

If you right click in the video area and select zoom 200% its a lot easier to see the cars.
