    RE: Return of Lunchbox..

i dont think you will need a wheely bar with the higher gear ratio
    ORIGINAL: lbshelfqueen

not the best pictures in the world but i think you can see the difference.

the gold one is the madbull gearbox, can see how much wider it is, it also makes the wheel base about 10mm longer.
the back of the chassis was lifted too so i had to remount the body lower but i thin it looks evil that low.

the gear ratio on the standard box is 14.7:1 and the new box is 9.1:1.

the wheels are mounted to the hubs with 12mm hexes so hpi wheels can be added if the idea works.

only downside so far i can see is there is nowhere simple to mount a wheelie bar... i might sratch the body (its mint lol)

hahaha it used to have an old novak system in there.. hence the bodywork damage..

my next mission is to sort the front end out.. i want to fit either double wishbones or widen the track and alter the camber

    RE: Return of Lunchbox..

just to see what would happen i have put some mad fighter front arms on the front of my LB. i have used standard springs and friction dampers.

check out the mad -ve front camber!!! its lowered the truck loads too so ground clearance is an issue now lol.

i need to make some custom tie rods because the orriginals are about half an inch too short each side.

with the suspension fully compressed the camber is a tad excesive but the tyres dont touch the body.

    RE: Return of Lunchbox..

now i have a choice of 3 front suspension set ups.

my latest is the fx10 double wishbone front arms. im sure i have done it the hard way because it took 3 hours a bit of drilling and some plastic trimming with a hacksaw and i have had to reposision the steering servo and turn the servo horn 180 degrees, also the ball connectors now face up instead of down,

the effect of these arms is very impressive.. now the wheels do not camber in when the suspension drops.

still need to make the tie rods longer but thats no problem.

told you it had months left in it! lol.

cant wait to try this in a straight line.. it doesnt wheelie anymore i think this is a combinatin of my esc being a marine esc and doesnt deliver full power from the start, also my wheels spin in the tyres because they are not glued yet until they are painted and the differential is a bit sloppy and one wheel always spins under acceleration

    RE: Return of Lunchbox..

i stripped the car back to nothing and im building it up again.. making it up as i go.

with a bare chassis first i fitted the rear suspenion, these are fighter buggy friction dampers, they have been modified to take a lunchbox shaft and spring, the result is a softer spring force, no rubber tubing is used as full travel will be no problem. the front is almost the same but there is rubber tubing and a cable tie to lower the front suspesion and limit travel.

the body mounts have been modified too, the front has been lifted using old nylon bushes and the rear lowered quite a lot to keep the body looking level. the rear mounts are actualy the metal 'U' brackets for fitting oil shocks.

    RE: Return of Lunchbox..

the last set of pictures for now.. the original gearbox has been ditched and a madbull gearbox is going in, i have had to shave the original rear arms to make the new gearbox fit.. its about 5mm wider. no 3rd shock mod just the original springs (wont last 5 mins)

this gearbox makes the rear track about 25mm wider and because it uses hex fittings to the wheels you get more choice.
using the new friction dampers makes the gear box sit a lot lower this means there is more distance between box and chassis and the motor is well clear of the spring (550 motor no problem)

another thing to notice is that the wheel base is longer and because the gearbox is twisted backwards so much it wont pull wheelies anymore this might improve handeling. i have fitted a 15 turn rally special motor and the gear ratio is now 9:1 instead of 14:1

    project ferrago continues!

last night i put the electrics in.. standard reciever.. the esc is a 12t ansman marine.. forward and reverse.. it gives half power for about 2-3 seconds then feeds the rest in quickly but soothly. i found a loose wire on the switch so i bridged the wires for now until i can be bothered to put a new switch in.

the servo i have had to mount using M-03 steering servo mounts to change the position of the servo slightly, also the ball connectors are under the horn rather than on top this is so the steering arms clear the top arms of the new front set up.

i have made my own steering arms using 3mm threaded bar and the standard plastic connectors

the body.. i havent painted it because it will be battered again soon anyway. the chrome is what is left of the gold box's parts.
stickers follow the theme of the rest of the car as they are a mixture of 3 or 4 other cars.

midnight pumpkin flames... the '53' is what remains from my herbie beetle. the rest are just randoms.

i like the hints towards the lunchbox... number plate.. bonnet sticker.. and rear door sticker. but my fave part is the FERRAGO sticker that i made from individual stickers.

no glass will be going in.. was thinking of some kind of mesh for now.

    RE: Return of Lunchbox..

I've just bought a lunch box for my son (ok for me really as he's only 2). I had one in the late 80's and loved it. It was the best Tamiya car that I ever owned and I loved it (I was spoilt kid - Boomerang, Avante, Lunchbox)

A few months back I started looking into what Tamiya was up too and was glad to see the Lunchbox was still around so I bought one last week. The issue I'm having is that the batteries are not lasting long at all (about 5 minutes). Can somebody give me some advice?

I have: Venom 3600 nihm battery, Tamiya Super Stock BZ Motor, Standard Pinion, TEU-101BK ESC.

When I got the batteries the instruction says to charge the batteries using a peak charger and not use a slow chargers as I used to do with new batteries when i was a kid. So I peak charged my batteries and headed to the beach.Literallythe batteries lasted for 5 minutes. I was curious to see if the ESC was hot to see if there was an issue with the motor drawing too much current anddrainingthe battery super quick, but it was cold.

Realisticallywhat run time should I be looking at with my set up? Any ideas?

I remember with my original Lunchbox + Technigold motor and my 1700 battery iwouldger at least 15 minutes, so was hoping to get at least 25 minutes from these batteries?

Thanks guys and it's been super fun to read through all your posts over the years. It's nice to be a lunch box owner again

When you peak charge are they supposed to get warm like the old NiCad batteries? I've left them on charge for a few hours today, the light flashed to say that the battery is fully charged and they are totally cold.

i agree about the battery problem.

but i had something realy strange happen.. my batteries wouldn't last 5 mins and i tried peak charging and slow charging but nothing seemed to help, they were wam after charging and warm after use. i tried a new charger and different batteries.

turned out to be my motor.. not my fast one ... tamiya sport tuned motor. when i took it out and spun it by hand it didn't feel notchy.. replaced the motor and woooooohooooooooo
