When i was a kid I had a Frog. Loved it. I remember my dad putting it together or trying to without the instructions. Night 2, he gets the instructions out.

Today I would give a #%T for a brand new RC10 Gold Pan or Kyosho Optima, but the cost is just to much to justify sitting on the shelf. So I am going with 1/8 electric. But I still wish I had that Frog.

My favourite vintage rc has to be the kyosho sandmaster 10 kit,

i got one of these when they first came out in 1993,

it was not my first rc, but it was my first hobby grade rc and my first nitro powered car,

after i built it and installed the radio gear i got about 10-15 tanks through it, then the pull start got messed up,

and being a novice at that time i thought that the engine was goosed, so it got thrown into the corner and eventually got lost,

after talking about the sandmaster on another thread recently i started to look for one on ebay,

eventually i found this one which needed to be completly stripped, cleaned and rebuilt as it was absolutly filthy,

i got it real cheap but it needed some tires as the originals were turning to dust,

then i discovered there was no compression left it the gt12 engine,

luckily i came across a gt12 engine in ebay which had a busted crankcase but with good compression so for £2 the original engine was fixed,

i now have built an almost mint sandmaster, with new bearings,
kyosho option house new front tires and a set of near new rear original bridgestone tires,

just have to get the body to complete the buggy but the next dry day we get here im gonna run a sandmaster for the first time in 17 years, which im looking forward to

Talking of the sandmaster i got given one a few months ago by the local race marshal at my track, it was an original 'sandmaster 10' kit but it was so baaaad, literally the worst i have seen ever, it was all there apart from wheels body and radiogear. so i got cleanin' and you will never guess what i found...

a
live
maggot
behind the gearbox and in front of the diff.

but got it running and driving in three days with some donor parts from other cars, i am just waiting on finding a body and wheels to get it mint....
such a laugh to drive

my favaroite? probaby any old nitro kyoshos, i have not had much experience with anything else vintage but the kyoshos are a challenge in themselves...

OK, heres one no one has mentioned. Back in the day (90-91?), I purchased a brand new Futaba FXT stadium truck...LOVED it, aluminum chassis, VERY well built. In the process of building a custom FXT right now, scored one with an original unpainted body ..
Extremely underrated truck, even now...

My first real RC, waaay back was a Latrax Corvette 1/12 on road car. Anyone remember those?

That car led to my first Tamiya, it was a Brat, got it for christmas I think the year it was released..? Loved that thing too.

Next up was the Tamiya Nissan King Cab, I outfitted it with aluminum See's wheels...totally cool

since then I've gone trough a few others, blitzer, hornet, super hornet, Futaba FX10, etc..

I recently built my first RC10 gold pan, WOW...now I know why I wanted one of those so bad 30 years ago, I am in the process of building 3 more as we speak...LOL
You can check my latest RC10 out in my garage here on RCU

The first R/C car I had was a Grasshopper I bought new when I was in 8th grade. I worked hard for that car. I spent just as much souping it up with things like bearings, motor upgrade, suspension upgrade, etc. I still have the tub and gearbox but sadly many parts are missing.

Next, I saved up enough to buy a Frog. Delivered a lot of newspapers for that one. I think I bought it my sophomore year in high school. I used in through college and stopped when the battery tray broke from too much jumping. I still have it, it is complete other than the extra gear bag. I have been meaning to check EBay for a gear set for it...

When I was in college I was on break visiting a friend who wasn't mechanically inclined at all. He was interested in R/C briefly and had 2 cars. He tore the first one down to get the radio out to put in the second. Later he went to rebuild the first one and didn't know how it went back together. It turns out his dog chewed up the instructions so he was stuck. Remember, this is back in the days before the internet. Anyway, he offered me the car for free so of course I took it. He brought out a Kyosho bag with an original HotShot in pieces inside. It was missing the front half-shafts that I bought mail-order and put the radio set from my Frog in it. I ran that for years. It still has paint from the dorm walls on the front bumper.

I went back to my parent's attic in the Midwest and retrieved these cars. I have run the Hotshot and through Craigslist got a radio for the Frog that I have yet to install. Once I work off the list of things to do around the house I may get to it...

My favorite vintage R/C car is without a doubt the Tamiya Bruiser. I read everything there was to read about this car. I remember riding to the hobby shop on my bike and staring at the box on the self. I couldn't deliver enough papers to afford that car. Move forward 20 years and I got my old cars out and decided to check EBay for a Bruiser. Holy cow! I am not working that much overtime to afford a Bruiser! At the time I was driving a 20 year old Prelude with 200k + miles on it that wasn't worth some of the going prices for a Bruiser. I guess I'm left with staring at these models, except now it is through a computer screen on the internet which didn't exist when I first laid eyes on a Tamiya Bruiser.

my all time favorite has to be the schumacher cat xl from 1987, after much work that car won 75% of the races i ran. it stayed together when all the others broke, and it only took 1/2 amp to turn the driveline. very efficient. i still have the car though now it's got problems from sitting. in '06 i put losi xx4 suspension on it and raced it a couple of times with good results. nowadays it could run again with some nonexisting parts, and i don't know if the old belts would put up withbrushless and lipos.

My oh my, memory lane comes out. I remember so many of these cars. The Frog, the Grasshopper and of course the wild willy's. Oh how I had to have one. Then I went to Germany and I found a Kyosho Scorpion. My baby. How I tore up the tracks with it. Then I ran across the Land Jump. A bitter sweet 4wd that never quite got running. I remember at a track in Budingen Germany doing great on the track when a guy came out with this FANCYnew RC10. *** was this. He had a ESC ( never heard of them then) and a fancy pistol grip remote. I was old school with my joy sticks lol. Many years have gone by. Many cars, but my heart still lives with a Kyosho Scorpion

I recall when my uncle got an RC10 when it first came out, I was running Tamiya and Kyosho at the time and it was a game changer. Much stronger, a quantum leap in suspension performance, and like Weylyn said, and an ESC which I had never seen. The speed and precision with which that thing flew around the track made pretty much everything else on the market obsolete (in terms of competition). And with a battery/brushless upgrade it is still competitive today.

My favorites are the original Clod and the gold pan RC10. The Clod was my first hobby grade RC car and RC10 my second. Of course, I also drooled over the RC10 graphite and the aftermarket graphite tub chassis for the RC10.

My favorite all time is the Hornet.  My friends had RC-10s and the like about the time I got mine.  One friend sold me his Hornet or most of one and the rest of my friends gave me enough pieces to have a complete one and a controller, etc.  I still love those guys for that, how nice for a bunch of selfish kids to pitch in so their friend has one too?

The first thing I did was get a hold of a 30s Ford Coupe body and made it a sweet hotrod, lol.  My friends had never dome that, they were all buggies and trucks, but thought it was cool.

BAck to present:  I went into a hobby store the other day and there it was, BAM.  I instantly loved it again.  Those wheels, why do I love those little wheels so much?

I went back and also found my old Hornet at my parents, so I am going to restore that too.  I am going to try and epoxy or something (a few cracks) the old 30s Ford Coupe body and repaint it too, just to see what I can do with it.

I always desperately wanted a High Roller though, but my funds never got close to it.  My friend also said that it was cool, but a little junky and would probably break dpown.  After I am "done" with my Hornets, I may get one of the crazy 60mph new Traxx trucks and put a classic 50s truck body on it, we'll see.

Is the HPI Nitro RS4 considered vintage? I bought mine in 2000 for club racing in RTR form. A couple
of years ago I restored it using period parts and engine. Had lots of fun with this one, now she's a shelf
queen.

took me 3 years to get everything then some dick stole it out of my living room during a party with no remote
i could still almost build one out of my leftover plastic parts but every time i think about it i get really really pissed off

I think the car I had most fun with was my Tamiya Calsonic Skyline... had the R33 model and I can't seem to ever catch one on ebay at a decent price.
If I was just dreaming... Egress and Midnight Pumpkin were the ones I dreamed of.

I have an old Traxxs Nitro Hawk with the first .12 motor on it and it runs great. That is my first buggy I ever got.

MRC Highroller. No I don't have one but wish I did. I remember when it came out, read the article in RC Car Action, put together my wish list and waited till Christmas. Still waiting!

In the mean time I have a small collection including an RC10 gold pan, vintage and classic. JRx2, my favorite at the time Kyosho Ultima, and for some reason love these silly things, Futaba FX10. Talk about bump steer!
