Tamiya TB-01 Resource Thread!
 

Just got one of these neat TB-01s yesterday.. (should get here next week!)

Obviously not the latest in the touring car world, but I wanted something different. This is from the time when scale / realism means something! :D

It is very different as it has the inner dust shell for a true rally setup. It also has driver figures for the scale appearance. Of course, typical Tamiya quality shell!

The thread is for all discussion regarding TB-01 chassis. Pictures / videos / questions / knowledge sharing are welcomed here!

But the reason why I bought this kit is because of this -> the dust shield and the driver figures. They just don't do this anymore... :)

Subaru's next machine to enter the World Rally Championships (WRC) was unveiled in October in Birmingham, England, at the British International Motor Show as the Subaru Impreza 2001 Prototype. Tamiya is proud to bring out the 2001 Prototype on the reliable TB-01 off-road Chassis (equipped with upper cover and cockpit).


Longitudinally Mounted Motor & Shaft Driven 4WD
The motor of this high performance R/C car is mounted longitudinally on the chassis, efficiently transmitting power to the shaft-driven 4WD system.


4-Wheel Independent Suspension & Oil Dampers
Sturdy four-wheel double wishbone suspension equipped with shock absorbing oil dampers. Block pattern semi-pneumatic rubber tires provide superb traction on light dirt surfaces.


Anti-Debris Chassis Construction
Bathtub type main frame equipped with upper cover to protect moving parts from contact with debris. Aluminum heat sink also included for dissipation of heat from motor.

Should be interesting.. I think your Sidewinder 5700kv will drop right in.. :D

I will also compare it w/ the TB-02 side by side to see what Tamiya did to improve the design from one generation (TB-01) to the next (TB-02).

And then get the TB-03 someday?!? :D

I still plan on getting a nice onroad someday and making it nice and quick with a 7700 and lipo, but who knows when that will happen. MAybe I just need to keep painting rc car shells and I will have the $$$ sooner than late rlol.

Wouldn't mind a TB-03 for sure. But definitely need to wait until the price come down.

Obviously the major difference on the TB-03 (vs. TB-02) is the IFS setup. I am not sure if it really offer any performance improvement other than the fact that you can run lower profile shell to improve the aerodynamic. But gosh, you got to be going fast enough to feel the aero effect.. :D

Ha, no way! This is discontinued (or being discontinued).. I think Tamiya is definitely moving toward the high performance route (at least for the on-roads).. I hope they continue to makes products that are unique and have a lot of characters.

Nothing wrong w/ high performance, don't get me wrong. But I think they got that well covered already! (TRF series, TB Evo series, MS series, etc.) So just want them to continue to make interesting / unique products..

For Subaru, it will have to be blue.. other color wouldn't look right.. so it will be box art!! :D

Just doing some research on the TB-01 chassis, here's a description from a website I found. Interesting, huh?! Looks like it was meant to be a rally car to begin with. Very interesting!


TB01 CHASSIS

Designed from the ground up to tackle off-road terrains, the TB01 is yet another shaft driven entree from Tamiya. Aimed at the rally driver in all of us, the TB01 in its stock form comes with extremely durable steel gears. Hey, they're heavy yes, but for off roading they can take all the punishment and come back ticking.

The TB01's tub chassis has been designed to be fitted with foam pieces all over the entry ports to prevent particles from polluting the insides of the chassis. Not shown in the picture is a rally dust cover which totally surrounds the TB01. The rally block tires also grip great in sandy conditions.

The TB01 can be used for touring races too, simply lower the ride height, and swap on racing slicks and you are ready to go! For the more competitive racer who'd like to really soup up their TB01s, get the TB01 Long Arm Suspension set and TB01 Carbon Frame Set. To further lighten the drive train, a lightweight aluminium centre shaft is available, and the differential ring gears do come in light weight versions.

Probably the only 2 hop-ups that I'd get for the TB-01!

Aluminum motor mount and CVDs..

The aluminum motor mount is still available but it is $$$!! :(

There's a CF chassis hop-up. But it was meant for the on-road version of TB-01. Would not make sense to do it to the rally car!

Looks really cool man! I never liked painting the figures, but it sure looks neat when they are done!
