"F-16s or F-14s or whatever" of today fire missles from as far out as possible and avoid dogfighting in close if at all possible.
Scale Combat is centered around the years 1935 to 1955 because the aircraft used during this period were designed to dogfight in close and shoot the enemy down by firing bullets at into them.
Besides, jets are for kids.

besides jets have itty bitty wings with very poor wing loading, we don't have the luxury of running those big fuel hungry turbines and better than 1to1 power ratios...
