Default need advice- microswitches, overvolting motors.

could someone tell me how you guys run 10 or 12 cells
through a micro switch on a low turn motor without cooking it?
i have looked high and low and all i could find is that the micro
switch allows the battery to put all its power to the motor?

im thinking of running 4s lipo on a low turn motor. i have a trigger
from a drill that i might use as the micro switch. would it work?
sorry i know absolutely nothing about this.
thanks

I wouldn't try it.

The use of a Microswitch in drag racing started years ago, when we found out that some 25Amp rated, 250 volt V3-2900 Microswitches would deliver instant "on" power and would live through a two-second 100+ amp burst. We used them for years.
However, in about 2004, those switches changed specs (V7 series), the motors got hotter, batteries got better, and we started seeing switch failures... mostly, the spring mechanism got hot and broke, causing the plunger to fall in and the switch to fail. We looked and looked for a better switch, and although we found a couple from Cherry Corp. that looked promising, but about the same time, the brushless motors started coming in and resetting all the records.
So, today, you might find a few old diehards using "bang-switches" and round cells, but most of the RC drag racing world has embraced the brushless motor and ESC as a better way to go.

cool. thankyou for posting that information aswel. if you dont me asking
why do they mostly use nimh batterys over lipos with these switches?
maybe they dont, just a trend i see.

i was thinking of using a low turn brushed motor and a micro switch,
but as you said brushless is the way now predominantly. i have a vxl
and a mamba max esc, i have run it on 4s, fitted with a ubec. why bother
with brushed motors?

i just dont understand how them brushed motors hanedle them volts without a speed controller?
whats the difference? how can a 9t motor run on any more than say 10volts?
excuse my noobness .

I have run 10 turn motors on 5s lipo before. Just about any voltage will work, but how long the motor lasts is the question. I was using a new/rebuilt motor on every pass to keep it working.

As you long as you have a load on the motor, they are ok to run just fine if they don't free wheel. Guys have run 20 2/3C cells and ran very fast. My track partner went 98 MPH with a 6 mag brushed motor and the 20 round cell combo just before the lipo/brushless rage took over. The com takes a severe beating as the power level comes up. My old 10 cell funny car would need a cut every 3rd pass at the most. Keep in mind the more power you run, you need to watch the amp draw on the motor.

I tried to run a brushed motor (RAE 6 mag) with a Thunder Power 40C 4 cell lipo, and it blew up and quit about 100 feet down track and still went 1.52 @ 92 mph. In hindsight I should have run it with less timing to make it live a little longer, but oh well. It got so hot in that short period of time, it ruined the com and flung the solder off the wire posts.

I would use your Mamba Max ESC you will be much happier with it. You can turn it up to be just like switches basicly, or back it off if the track is a little loose off the line.

wow. [X(]
thanks again guys for the info and reply's.
i ran a 12t motor on 3s and it was one of the
fastest things i have seen. only got about 3 runs though.

i am entering a high speed shootout for fun and wondered
if picking up a brushed motor would be a cheap and fun alternative,
but i will run the vxl motor. im not too bothered if that blows.

i am just worried that the lipo might go poof, and burn my car. [&o]
theres so many gambles you take with drag racing. you guys are
crazy.
