HOLY CRAP was that your 5000th post?

You will discover that lipos aren't really that big of a deal after you deal with them for a bit. You just get used to them and observe proper precautions. You will realize that they are very robust and reliable batteries and then after a while they will be old news.

RE: Storing Lipo's
Basically after a run, charge them up to 3.7 / 3.8V and then store. On the night before, or early in the day of the run, charge them up to 100%.
And be sure to balance. Avoid storing for any length of time (more than a day or two) fully charged or fully discharged.

RE: Storing Lipo's
Well with much anticipation i went by UPS to get my batteries tonight. I was so exctied to get them and then swap the connectors and try them out.
Got in the truck, opened the package, and one of them is noticeably puffed. Ill post pictures later, but its pretty dissapointing to have a bad first experience. Oh well, what's 2 more weeks when i've waited this long?
On a good note, hobbypartz was extremely nice to deal with. I called and they said they would replace it no problem. The only dissapointment is that I have to pay to ship it back myself. Guess thats part of the hobby though.
Anyways, I guess Ill swap connectors on the good battery tonight, and try it in my wifes stampede. It wont be quite the kick my brushless MGT would have had with both of the lipo's though.
If you guys need me, ill be crying in the corner I was planning to run it tomorrow since im going to run, but I guess Ill have to put the new clutch bell bearings back in my old faithful savage tonight and run it tomorrow.

Watch your motor temperatures, reset the slipper, maybe change the gearing a bit (gear down). Run it easy at first b'cos a setup that ran fine on NIMH can sometimes overheat or end up destroying itself on LiPo.

RE: Storing Lipo's
tough luck I've been lucky enough to have all my batts come in in perfect shape and charge. Just got a new charger as well, and this thing is great!
Hope you get it sorted out well. I think you'll feel a difference in the pede, battery is lighter, and holds voltage under load better. Have fun.

RE: Storing Lipo's
Thanks guys. I am dissapointed, but I have no where near given up, just gonna have a delay on my maiden voyage of the MGT. The only good thing about this is that my birthday is next week, and my wife is giving me my 2.4 radio for that. So I can put the 2.4 in the MGT, and then run the LiPo's on it. Should be a whole new truck[8D]
The good news... I came home and swapped the connector to a traxxas connector on the good LiPo. Put it on the charger and it only charged for about 35 minutes before the charger cut off. Took in about 1800mah. I guess it was already charged pretty good. I never thought to check voltage before putting it on or taking it off the charger though. Anyways, I put it in the stampede and took it out. I have the traxxas talons on it right now and the blacktop is wet. It was spinning like crazy. Instantly lighting up the tires. So i brought it in and put my good tires on the back. Took it back out and the sucker was pulling the wheels constantly. Even from a 5mph roll it was pulling the wheels all the way up. I know that doesent sound like much, but its a pretty mild setup and I can definately tell the LiPo woke up the bottom end. I can tell a little difference on top too. Im actually thinking of going up 2 or 3 teeth on the pinion now to see what that does for it. It sure seems like it could handle it now because of how fast it picks up speed instead of how it gradually did it before. That would make the truck much more fun to run because the top speed would come up a decent bit. Might have to see if I have a bigger pinion to try in it later.
After running it for about 10minutes in the stampede, the battery was still at 7.94 volts, so it had barely been used. Very happy with it in the pede, but im sure ill like it more when I can run them both in my MGT.

RE: Storing Lipo's
I am a UPS driver and the reason we sneak up is so we don't have to hear people complain about their hemmeroid surgeries and tell us their life troubles when we've got 100 other coustomers to take care of that day so we can get home to fly OUR RC planes.

Excerpt from the UPS guide book is attached
Doesn't mater if I'm home or not they don't ring the doorbell, or anything. I once stood on the other side of the door when they umm "knocked" and couldn't hear it, and neither could any of the dogs in the house (we have a fair amount) that can hear people walking on the street, and bark like mad. Then they got those silent ass trucks that make like 0 sound so you can't even hear them with the windows open. I swear they got some kind of advanced engine sound muffling system in place.
Shoulda just signed the slip and said where to leave it IMO easiest way to get your stuff

Thanks guys. I should have them today, and ill solder the connectors on and charge em up. Im hoping to get to run them some, but of course it rained a flood here last night, and today the high is probably 50* or so so its cool too. If it will hold off on the rain though, ill probably be able to give them a go tonight.
There was 1 question that didnt get answered though... Is it ok to leave them at the cut off point for a few days if you cant get around to charging them?
I havent looked yet, but i dont think my Duratrax Onyx 230 has a storage mode. I guess I could just quit charging when the battery gets to a certain voltage, or, I could set my chargers time limit so that it would only put 2000mah or so back into the battery.
UPS tried to deliver them this morning, but wouldnt leave the package because no one was there. My wife only works 1/2 day today so im hoping she'll be there when they come back because the tracking said a 2nd attempt would be made.

RE: Storing Lipo's
Here are the pictures I took. Sorry they arent the best, but you can tell 1 is swollen. The pictures with them side by side you can see how much taller the puffed one is sitting. The last picture is the battery that isnt puffed. I just took that to show the battery decent. The one with my blinky balancer on it is the one that is puffed. Dont know why i tried to balance it because im sending it back.

Guess what I had lipos delivered by the USPS and they actually were delivered today, and not sitting in a warehouse
Now only if my soldering iron didn't crap out after I soldered one wire...

RE: Storing Lipo's
The only dissapointment is that I have to pay to ship it back myself.
Check each cell thru the balancing plug on new packs, make sure they're very close (.1V) .
As far as storing in the fridge, I wouldn't. Mfr's recommend long-term storage at 50% (3.6V/cell) in a cool, dry place. Even the best fridge has some moisture, and water is very bad for Lipos. They self-discharge so slowly, little is gained anyway. I keep mine in the basement in an old BBQ grill with a smoke detector overhead. I've never seen any mfr recommendation about fridge storage helping Lipos, have looked all over. Just my .02.

RE: Storing Lipo's
It really shouldnt be my responsibility. However, they wont send the new one out until they get the old one back, so im kind of between a rock and a hard place. If I had paid $80 a piece for them I would be far more upset, but its still aggrovating.

RE: Storing Lipo's
my charger's storage mode charges/discharges them to 3.8 volts per cell. when my ESC cutoff kicks in, often times the cells are not balanced and can have a difference of .2 volts or less. i wouldn't let them sit in that condition. i always storage charge after use.

RE: Storing Lipo's
I looked at the instructions on my ESC today. I dont have the programming card yet, so I cant change anything.
The cutoff on it is adjustable, but is currently set at 3.0v per cell. Is this ok to discharge my batteries to until I get the program card in a few weeks? I figure maybe 3.2v per cell would be better.
Also, my charger seems to trickle charge after it cuts off. I didnt think you were supposed to trickle a LiPo?

RE: Storing Lipo's
Well, hobbypartz was supposed to have received my battery today. Hopefully they can get me a new one out pretty soon and get it back to me fast.
In the mean time I have ordered some nice battery trays for my MGT with velcro straps. A lot nicer than the "battery box" i had made that held both batteries. I feel like now that im running Lipo's its a little more important to have the batteries in something that cant puncture them and hold them well. So hopefully I can get the trays and put them on before I get my battery back.

RE: Storing Lipo's
Well, I got my LiPo back tonight and am very pleased Hobbypartz never asked any questions, just sent me out a new one, informed me of it, and my wife had put it on the table for me to find when i came home from work.
Swapped connectors, got both of them charged and stuck em in the truck as soon as i got home from work today. When they got done charging, I stuck them in the truck and headed outside with it
I ran for about 25 minutes. Power is crazy now. Its really uncontrollable if you just keep the hammer down on it. Wheelies with no problems, and just freakin' moves in general. Im positive it goes 40-45mph now and its a blast to drive. I predict myself breaking more stuff now, but i guess thats part of it. lol
I ran for 25 minutes even(timed), and came in because i lost the grub screw out of my front drive cup, and supper was ready. I checked the voltage on both batteries when I came in, and both batteries were at 7.3 volts, or about 3.65v per cell. Still had at least 5 minutes left im sure, so I can see 35-40 minutes no problem when im just out climbing hills and arent on the throttle hard a lot. Better tires are gonna make this thing a wheelie machine too Batteries were just warm to the touch, and the motor and esc were the same. Seems like the gearing is perfect because nothing is being overly taxed.
Very happy with my brushless/lipo setup and glad i made the move to lipo! My nimh packs were fine, its just that my brushless system has really put the hurt on them and they are losing their punch because of it. I wanted to get some lipo's before i ruined them.
