Default gearing for a Slash brushless conversion

i've searched the forums, and haven't come up with what I need.

I'm going to do a Slash brushless conversion. However, I need input on gearing. I want performance without the heat issues from overgearing.

Would love to keep the stock spur gear, in case I want to put the stock motor back in and run the spec class.

20/86 is a good starting point. May even want to go to a 22t pinion.

More info is needed on what ESC and motor kv you plan on running before we can start talking about gearing.

very highly depends on the brushless combo you have.... 22/86 would fry a castle 4600 motor very quickly in a slash.

Good call guys...didn't even think about that. Was just jumping to the Velineon 3500 conclusion.

Now the 4600 probably wouldn't fry at 22/86, because ThunderbirdJunkie has run 22/87 in his SC10 with that motor, and the transmission ratio is taller than that of a Slash.

You're right.

A Velineon 3500 with matching ESC fell into my lap, it came out of a brand new Slash 4x4.

also thinking about picking up the optional cooling fan that mounts to the top of the ESC.

Anyone know what size shaft on the VXL 3500 motor? 5mm?

It's a 1/8" shaft, sometimes referred to as 3.175mm or something like that. Normal 1/10 scale pinions are used.

I've tried 23t/18/16/15/14/13/12T pinions with the 86 tooth spur, 12T runs the coolest and it's still on the hot end...

Really? on the track, ThunderbirdJunkie runs 20/87 in his SC10, and has run up to 24/84 with the hottest recorded temperature while bashing being 160.

20/86 would be a good starting point then for the VXL setup. Definitely get the cooling fan for the ESC as well. Especially if you feel like slapping a 3s lipo in it.

I tried some pretty "cool" gearing like 18/90 and still ran into heat issues so I got an aluminum tranny case and was done with it, works like a charm. I tore the whole truck apart trying to find binding but everything was smooth, I guess it was my driving style lol, but the tranny case has helped drastically.
