RE: AE SC10 4x4 Build
ORIGINAL: Southern Cross
Thanks for the assist guys. This is the drive-train I pretty sure I am going to go with. I took your advice and mixed it with my personal preference for AE products. The AE drive-train in TRF416 treated me will and I like to stick with what I know. Also for whatever reason I generally like to stick with one brand when I build. My XXX-T CR is all Losi too. I know there were way better options out there but I just couldn't help it. I like the ease of programming with the Losi gear but the quality isn't on par from what I could tell with the little bit of experience I had. Anyway....here it is...
ESC
LRP SPX8 Competition ESC

Motor
LRP Vector X12L Short Course 5.5T

Servo
XP DS1015 Hi Torque/Hi Speed Digital Servo
http://www.teamassociated.com/xpdigi...details/29167/
Battery
Reedy 5500mAh 7.4V 60C LiPo
http://www.teamassociated.com/reedy/parts/details/628/
Receiver
Spektrum SR3100 DSM2
http://www.spektrumrc.com/Products/D...odID=SPMSR3100
I'm fairly positive that is the setup I am going to run. I figured if the Vector 5.5 proved to be to hard to handle at first I could pull it for awhile and run something more tame...then when ready throw the Short Course speedster back in. I've always used Futaba servos but I figured I would try an XP. The only part still up for debate is the battery. If I don't get the Reedy I am going to go with an Orion ''Carbon Pro'' 6500mAh 7.4V 90C pack. My other Orion Carbon has been great and the new 90C Carbon Pro series look like the battery to beat these days. But...I wanted to keep in line with my all AE theme...and save a bit of cash in the process...those Pro Carbons aren't exactly cheap.
I'll probably be ordering up everything in the next few days or so. Figure I'll do a bit more surfing and see if anything jumps out at me.
Thanks again for the help.

So I have a question...I'm new to the off road side of cars (been running on-road for a couple decades now on and off) and I just picked up a SC10 4x4. I picked up a Havok ESC with the 8.5 540 sized motor and will be running the 93 spur with a 19 pinion.
My question is will this be too little motor for the truck? Seems like everyone is going with near $400 motor/ESC setups running 550 4.5s. Just seems like it had pleanty of power when I tested it a little last night with the 8.5 540 but would hate to get smoked by a better motor and not a better driver.

I'll leave that one for the experts here. If my local track is any indication though...everyone I talked to when I stopped by today was running a 4.5T. Of course for all I know the owner may have talked them all into the same motor! Love the username by the way. That's exactly where mine comes from. The Armies of the Southern Cross. I'll have to show you my pics of my Robotech collection one day. I've had that handle since back in the BBS days.
Almost forgot about my pinion. I have case full with a nice selection of pitches buried somewhere. I'll do some trial and error. I usually run on the safe side...picking longevity over speed...course I'm not a racer.

RE: AE SC10 4x4 Build
I want to go Futaba but for now I will have to stay with my DX3R. I bought the Spektrum awhile back when my LHS was having a sweet sale on them. I don't remember what I paid but I remember thinking it was a steal at the time. IIRC I also got a bunch of SR3100 receivers for $50 too...can't find the frackin things under $99 now though. Some little kid was sporting a 4PKS (I think) and that thing looked insane. I like my DX3R enough but it feels fragile. It hasn't broke or anything but I can tell the scroll wheel starting to give. My DX6i feels the same too. I've had trouble with reception in my neighborhood in the past too. We have tons and tons overhead power/telecom infrastrusture...I'm guessing that's the cause...but I've had more than one crash that had nothing to do with me. What radio holds the reins on your SC10?
*EDIT*
Almost forgot...thanks for mentioning that about the shaft diameter. I believe all of my pinions are 3.5mm. I'll pick up an 11,13,15T from Associated. Now that I think about it...I think I had trouble with my old pinions too. They were Robinson Racing I think...and I had trouble with the set screws on a few of them. Reminded me of my days being a pager repair technician. Dating myself there...some if not all of you guys have probably never seen a pager! Anyway...tuning the crystals on a Motorola or Uniden required you turning this tiny little set screws that seemed like they were made of the softest lead on the planet. The slightest torque and they would strip or break apart. I know I hosed up at least two of the RR set screws.

RE: AE SC10 4x4 Build
ThunderbirdJunkie has been running his seven year old 3PM FM until this week...he picked up a 3PKS with a FASST module, two 603FS receivers, a case, and a couple batteries and a synth module for a pretty good steal (used)...so he's finally jumped into 2005 with 2.4[&:]
The RRP pinions are stout. ThunderbirdJunkie has a ton of them left over from his 2wd mod buggy days that he still uses when he needs something 18t or smaller. The aluminum ones were and are junk and don't last for nothin' (they're still available for the on road guys, but they wear out FAST in off road). That being said, some of the OLD old Robinson pinions used a 2-56 setscrew and THOSE sucked. Broke far too many .050" hex drivers in those[:@]
Also, PAGER? ThunderbirdJunkie hardly knows 'er!

You may want to go with lower gearing for that 540 8.5, but as long as the temps are kept in check, you should be good to go. Which Havoc version are you running? The 3S or the Pro will be ideal, the regular 2S Havoc may be pushing it.

Havoc Sport. Not sure how that falls compared to the ones you mentioned but I'm going to assume it may not be enough.
Also, what pinion do you suggest? Looking at the manual it went up to a 17 for a 7.5 540 motor but listed nothing for an 8.5 motor. Judging from the other recommendations I figured a 18 or 19 would be about right.

RE: AE SC10 4x4 Build
ThunderbirdJunkie would start with a 17 on the 8.5. A guy at our local track is running a 7.5 540 and the thing is stupid fast. Fast to the point that he outruns ThunderbirdJunkie and his Castle 4 pole on the straights[X(]

RE: AE SC10 4x4 Build
I just ordered a set of AE pniions for my Vector X12L 5.5T (I fear the 4.5T!). They were cheap so I ordered an 11T, 12T, 13T and a 15T. Hardened steel...all of the RR pinions I mentioned earlier were alloy. What you said makes sense since I had problems with mine. Getting my shop setup for the build...dusting off my tools and getting ready for my kit which should arrive tomorrow. I masked off a Mini-T Pro body I had and painted a bit. Been awhile since I've had that little baby out. I forgot how insanely loud my old Pro was. Sounds like a clockwork giant or something!

RE: AE SC10 4x4 Build
*Sorry for the double-tap but I was hoping to get some help and wanted it bumped*
Everything minus my receiver arrived so I started my build. Everything was going fine except a bunch of errors in the assembly manual...nothing major....but a bunch of screws listed in the instructions that aren't in the back...wrong measurements...all easily figured out...not my problem though. So...my build stalled while I wait on my receiver or decide stealing one from another car...then I noticed the rear chassis had broke where the recessed nut "holes" are. On both sides! It looks like I overtightened them and broke them...which is odd because I remember not feeling much resistance when I was screwing them in and stopped. Ordered a new one. My questions is...is there an easy way to swap it out...or am I going to have to go backwards through the instructions from the receiver install...cause that would suck!
