Im in the process of doing some maintenance, while gluing up some tires, taking bearings out and cleaning/lubing them...I can tell ya that graphite parts do wear out, 'cause I have noticed more slop in the arms and hub carriers. 8 years running the same original parts is a testament to Duratrax's graphite durability in my book.

I will post a video of the "slop" here soon, and see what you guys think.

I probably won't replace arms and such until they break, but one would think there is more stress with more "slop" to the original hinge pins with 8 years wear & tear.

I got some rims in the mail today and curious of the different offsets (edge of rim ~ inside mounting surface) each brand of REAR rim has. Here we go:

DTX Evader ST rims offset = 15.46mm
Losi XXXT rims offset = 19.13mm
Associated T4 rims offset = 15.94mm

Losi XXXT rims will decrease total rear width of Evader ST by 3.67mm x 2 = 7.34mm
Associated rims will decrease total rear width of Evader ST by .52mm x 2 = 1.04mm

Axle holes (LOL say that three time fast) on the Associated rims need to be drilled out (just a couple of hairs) in order to fit the Evader ST/EXT axles.

The Losi front rims design makes the Evader ST's bearings sit further inside the rim, but offset is only 1mm difference...making the Evader ST 2mm narrower when using Losi XXXT rims. The bearing spacer, that is normally used in Duratrax's rims, is useless between the bearings when using Losi XXXT rims. Using Associated rims upfront will widen the Evader ST by 14.42mm, which is what I was afraid of...back when I was testing front hub carriers for hex conversions.

Associated T4 front suspension uses shorter arms; with wider hub carriers, and less offset rims to get maximum ROAR width of 13" whereas Duratrax uses the opposite to get to the 13" maximum width.

One last thing about using Losi XXXT front rims on the Evader ST...you need to add an extra small washer or two before the Front Axle Washer #DTXC6170 is put on or you will have the 3/16" locknut touching the rim, thus causing binding. I'm not sure about Evader EXTs front axles, I think they use 4mm locknuts and may or may not need the extra washers.

DTX Evader ST rims offset = 23.12
Losi XXXT front rims offset = 24.12
Associated T4 front rims offset = 15.91mm

Losi on left..............................Duratrax........ ...............Associated on right.......


Bottom line...your best bet at keeping the width of the ST close to stock using rims other than Duratrax's...Associated T4 Rear rims and Losi XXXT front rims. As for me, I've come to a conclusion...stock Duratrax ST or Losi XXXT front rims & Losi XXXT or Associated T4 rims in the rear.

I've been in the garage for the past couple of nights, and going through some boxes of RC gear to find something to sell for some Gladiators tires I want to try out so badly.

I found a box labeled ST TIRES & RIMS. Inside was some funky bright Duratrax neon yellow front & rear rims with stock ST tires; along with Losi Step Pins and a bag of Losi Reptile Truck Tire (Silver compound).

So the rear Reptiles (I wonder how long ago they were discontinued) and Duratrax ribbed fronts are gonna be mounted to my first set of Losi rims. I hope the rims hold up to the abuse, 'cause I'm tired of ungluing perfectly good tires from those things Duratrax calls rims.

I am up to page 638 on TEC Part 1...It's a lot of repetitive stuff on there I know, but it gives me something to do while commercials are on while I'm watching DISC or HIST or NAT GEO channels at night until football season starts. Anyway, I just came across one of the Evader SC conversions. That was one of my ideas I had envisioned when doing the hex fitting on my ST. Seems like a lot of work for the front shock tower mount (handmade)...should be able make something happen with a stock one IMO.

Maybe some winter season when I am stuck inside, and have time to think about it more....I'll start piecing something together. Who knows, by that time, the whole SC phase of RC may be going by the way side like the ST class racing.

That's a pretty cool-lookin' body. Oooo....graphite! Arms, too! Glad to see you have bumpers on that puppy. Graphite is strong, but brittle too. Makes for a great chassis tho. Where did you find the bits to cobble the body mount together? Looks like a ladder-frame cross-member.

That black SC Evader conversion was from The Evader Coalition member monsterbombs back in December 2009. He had built a front shock mount out of aluminum...and that body has "break away" panels on it.


I have a Associated SC10 spare parts box started for my future truck build, and it was sitting in front of me. The body mount is for a SC10 Race-Spec RTR. I just eyeballed it up; drilled two holes to match the outer most holes on shock tower, and had to move the top of the shocks to the inner most hole for now....until I can get the Dremel out.

If I do decide to do a SC conversion attempt...it'll be in the winter time.

Right now I'm yanking out my tranny from last nights hard running with the Reptile Tires/Losi rims. I cranked the throttle EPA to 100% and now I got a low-mid tone grinding noise to investigate.

But I noticed a big difference, within 5 secounds, between soft compound tires and medium compound tires last night. My first time ever using a med. comound tires. The front stock Duratrax ribs worked pretty good at grabbin the hard dirt. It's the Reptiles that had me fishtailing like a fool.

EXT2Rob dude...yes your right...as soon as you hear some funky noise....STOP!!! The low grinding noise I heard was the screws coming loose on the BL Diff and the spider gears starting to grind. I'm pretty sure that's what it was. I could turn the screws with no effort and the diff joints/case had play in them.

I think I had about 30~40 runs on the tranny since last inspection. All in all...I'm happy! All the gears have teeth...and all internal gears turn smoothly. I can't complain...pictures of what a 3+year old tranny looks like at my garage...


All that grease is from the inside of the diff I suppose....flew out as the diff gear case screws were coming undone.

Good ear! You stopped in time. The inner gear's teeth still look good. But yeah, clean it out good, looks like some metal bits in there.

Did you notice the little pins behind the large bevel gears in the diff? They hold the drive cups in. Eventually, those pins will fail, and cause a similar grinding sound when it does. You might want to consider getting some music wire while you have it open and replace them. 1.19mm rod will do it.

Sorry for using the thread as a "daily diary", I'll soon get sick of it and move on ...

What happens when you get a Saturday off from work and run the Evader on a morning dew track?...Mess to clean up?...nahhh. That dirty Evader is calling me to run it harder and faster to knock off the mud. Also, my biggest fear isnt tranny issues or parts failing...it's my black Jack (he thinks RC cars are for his chasing/chewing/biting pleasure).

When I was putting the bearings in the front rims I noticed the axle washers (#126 ST manual) has less of a lip on it than the rear axle washer (#82 ST manual). I haven't used the rear washers since I installed the BL Evader tranny on my ST...(had to remove ST Pro's CVDs and use EXT's dog bones/axles as you all know by now). Also, when I installed those EXT axles; I had no room between the rear hub bearing, and the axle pin to use the standard ST rear axle washers. I have always used a plain Traxxas washer that was in my tool box ,from a TCP Buggy, to keep the rims from touching the rear hubs.

After today, it finally hit me...the front axle washers are the perfect fit on the EXT rear axle, between the bearing and pin with the tiny lip facing the bearing. I haven't seen any mention of them being used in the Brushless Evader/EXT/EXT2 manuals. (Rear Axle Washer DTXC6180 / Front Axle Washer DTXC6170)

What does everyone else use?

The washers I normally use looks like the ones you were using. They are the size of the bearing race. Mine might be a little bit thicker than your though. I lost one of them, so I looked and looked through my extra washers and the best I could come up with was a washer that fit tightly over the axle. Because it's just a flat washer with no lip, it presses down on the race and the bearing exterior. I need to get the right washer before I cause too much damage...

Sorry I haven't been posting lately guys. I started school two weeks ago and I've been working on sorting out an order to build my first RC kit, which will be my first RC crawler, the Axial SCX10 Jeep Wrangler G6. I finally got the main order put in and I can't wait for the package to show up on Tuesday. I started a thread on what I should use for electronics about a week ago, so I've been trying to keep up on the posts there in any of my free time. This is my first year of High school, and because I homeschooled, it is very tough. Those public school kids have no clue what kind of intense schooling we do for homeschool... I don't have homework though, because I manage to get it done in class. Also since I'm still slowly building this RC trailer, working on our full size trailer restoration, and helping dad with our automotive/house repairs/projects in the evening, I just don't get a lot of spare time. Hoping the load will lighten up as schools gets on a set pace...

That's OK, mate. It's kinda funny how long this "thread" has continued on and on, as each new Evader owner discovers it. It's gotten epic. Has to be some kind of record. I expect the mods to create a Vol.III someday. Tho we're only up to, what, page 83 now?

As for those axle washers, I found a Durango part I could get eight or ten in a bag for a few bucks. I wasn't able to ever find a DTX part number for them.

to my knowledge it's the longest running thread series on this site, at least in the surface sub-forum. the original TEC was started 8 months before the original lounge, however the lounge has TEC beat in total posts/pages. both TEC's together cum out to less than 950 pages, whereas the lounge 2 had 1360 pages by itself! all 4 total 3804 and counting.

Durango part? Do you have any part numbers for those washers? I just got some front ST axles (come with the washers,DTX doesn't sell them separately); hinge pins, and rear susp. mounts off of ebay (cheap) for my spare parts collection.

Yes, my "Jack" is a mini Austrian Shepherd. If only I could train him to flip my car over when I have a mishap on the track.

Jeez...my memory. I was wrong about how many you get. The Durango "crunch spacer" part number is TD310032, and you only get two for $2.75. But yeah, why doesn't Duratrax sell these? Kind of important.

there is a thread called The Lounge: Version 4.0. as the name suggests, it's the 4th iteration of the thread. the first was called LUNCHBOXERS LOUNGE and was started october 30th, 2006 as an attempt to keep track of lunchboxer's many build threads. just so you dont ask, lunchboxer is a member who built a lot of kits and did build threads on many of them. he still posts, but mostly in the lounge. it quickly turned into a massive off-topic thread with conversations ranging from car maintenance and computer troubleshooting to fictional occupations at fictional shady businesses. at it's peak (the lounge 2), the thread could progress 3 pages in an hour. that thread went so long that the servers couldnt handle it! hence the lounge 3 and 4.
