The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
#2201
Hey guys, just cartwheeled my Evader. Broke my custom gear cover, the rear shock tower, my antenna tube, and put some sizable damage on my body. It was cruising at ~55mph on asphalt with my front end too high. Wind got under it and put it verticle rolling down the road on the wheelie bar. I was quick enough to drop the throttle and bring it back down, but when it landed I had my front wheels turned, they grabbed the pavement, and sent it into a 50ft cartwheel. I'll take pics later.
Anyway, I was checking out shock towers on Tower Hobbies. I see no difference between the ST and EXT rear shock tower. The specs both say key part #40, however the ST is $3.59 and the EXT is $2.69. ***?
ST: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXAML4&P=7
EXT: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXSXC7&P=7
Anybody know why that is? The VW rear shock tower is $2.69 as well. I currently have the 60T spur, so I think I'm going to go to a 56T 32P so I can use the stock gear cover and not have to modify another one. My shocks need a serious rebuild, so I'm skipping that and buying new. I can't decide on if I should get Traxxas, Proline, or the replacement ones. The replacement ones are available at $15.49 for a rear set. Not a bad price IMO. I want shocks that don't leak all over and need rebuilding three times a year. Any thoughts?
It really sucks that the Evader Brushless body is discontinued. I can't even find one. I think I'm going to stay with the beat up one I have now just for bashing purposes. If I come across some extra spending $$ down the road this year, I might spring for a EXT2.4 body. Probably Red/Charcoal since they look the best to me. My favorite is the Black/Red Brushless version that I have. If only I could get my hands on one...

On a side note, does anyone have a box for any version of the Evader? I hang all my boxes for each of the vehicles I buy on my shop/room wall. Eflite is working on getting me a Pulse XT 25E box and the only other one I need is the Evader box. I bought both the Evader and Pulse used with no box. I don't care which version it is, just as long as it's in reasonably good shape and is a true Duratrax Evader box. I don't need any of the foam or anything inside, but if you have it, that's great too. I tried the LHS for an EXT2.4 box, but no luck. I'd really like to finish the collection. I'm also willing to pay a small sum for the box and shipping. PM me if you have something. Thanks!

That would be great! Thanks cumquat!
Here's the Evader:
Very minor for all the pics. lol You can see the shock oil in the spring retainer, so that sucks. I wish I could buy a new Evader Brushless body, but they're discontinued. EXT2.4 will have to do.

It's gonna be a long winter...everytime I think I see my track...it starts snowing again . Wow, I finally got two days off. Now I'm board. I'm cleaning the ST up a bit; rebuilding shocks, and just giving everything a once over. I was digging for a part that was needed...to the bottom of 'ye olde box of Evader parts I went...

Is Is Really Over?
Well, it looks like the Evader's long production run is finally over... so sad.
Hobbico putting Arrma in the forefront in design and production... taking over were Duratrax is leaving off?

Really? Duratrax has stopped making the Evader. That's really too bad. Such a fun platform. Glad i still have both of mine. Maybe they'll appreciate over time.

Has anyone confirmed that with Duratrax or Hobbico? Man, how long have they had that car in production? Must be some kind of record.
But it is kind of a dated platform. Never did like the steering system. But the entry price was perfect for newbies. It's what got me into the hobby. Learned a lot.
Been a lot of new brands coming to the fore, maybe ol' Duratrax is going the way of the dinosaurs. They only had like, what, three models?

How disappointing... Hope they keep producing parts. I never got to use the stress-tech guarantee since dad bought mine used at well over a year old back in 2008.
Appreciation... Think you can find those boxes, cumquat?

Hello Evader Peeps...
I've been out of the game for a long time and have lots of questions.... I first would like to know more about the evader line history... Seems like there's a brushless evader now... when did that come out... Heck when did the original evader come out?
A little history lesson would be much appreciated.
I started a brushless conversion to my evader st and stop about half way thru it.. (that was about 5 years ago). I've got everything out of the closet and looking to pick up where I left off.. So there lots more questions to come..
Thanks,
Soad100100

Yup, Duratrax came out with the brushless version a couple? of years ago. Didn't last long. Haven't heard why. Don't know much else about the history of the platform but I know it's a lot more fun to drive with a brushless set-up!

The original Evader has been around a looonng time. Even used to be a nitro version. I got into the hobby with the Evader EXT2 in 2010. I think the original Evader was the Evader ST, then came the EXT, then the EXT2. The Evader Brushless came out in 2012, and was only on the market for 18mo before it got discontinued. Duratrax made a deal with Castle Creations for the motor system, but I think the deal cost DTX too much, they priced the car at $269, and they didn't sell many of them, since you could get an Associated T4 for about the same price. And considering that you could put a $75 HobbyWing brushless motor system in it for a lot less, it just wasn't a good seller.
BUT it DID get us the all-metal diff we were all clamoring for! (And a better front bumper) Which made all of us who installed our own brushless systems very happy.
So the BL version got killed, and DTX then came out with the Evader EXT2.4. Same as the EXT2 but it came with a 2.4ghz radio system. Big step above the old-fasioned AM radios and crystals
Most parts from all generations of Evader are interchangeable, with two notable exceptions: The Tranny Case and the rear chassis plate. The tranny case in the ST was narrower than in the later generations. And the rear chassis plate, in which the bottom of the tranny case sits, has a space that the bottom of the case fits into. So, if you have a ST chassis plate, and try to install an EXT tranny case into it, it will not fit. Similarly, the all-metal diff will not fit inside the ST tranny case, it has to be an EXT or later part.
Oh, the Brushless Evader also had a different slipper clutch arrangement, and a different Top Gear, and none of those parts are interchangeable. It's one, or the other. Either one would work in your conversion, but you'll probably need a new rear chassis plate and diff case, as I mentioned above.
Do yourself a favor, and go buy a front and rear bumper set from T-Bone Racing. Those items will save your butt more than anything else you could do to the car. The BL Evader front bumper was a major improvement, but for toughness, it's just OK. Get the T-Bones. (Thrasher front, NM Rear)
Check out this How To Make Your Evader Bashproof thread, it has all the stuff I learned about the Evader in it. You will find it useful.

thanks. The pn# for the springs is LOSA-5150, 2.5" spring for the xxxt, xxxsct. Very soft and the Losi springs are a direct fit for the Evader ST shocks.

The ST has CV axles in the rear and they are too large to fit in the BL metal differential's outdrives. You have to get the EXT dogbones, EXT axles, and M4 wheel nuts. I ran into that problem when converting my ST. I recommend that you get the BL rear chassis plate over the EXT because it has an extra set of holes for a wheelie bar kit that they sell, and I really like it. Your ST top shaft will work fine in the tranny and I personally prefer the ST slipper setup over the BL, so that's why I haven't gone to that. I like being able to just unbolt the spur and put a new one on without having to mess with the slipper assembly. If you haven't already, grab the EXT2 metal idler gear. It's a direct replacement for the stock plastic one in the tranny. After that and the new diff, you will have a bulletproof all metal tranny and it will take all the beating you can give it, as long as you replace a couple pins in the diff with music wire. Replacing the wheel pins with music wire is also a good idea, but it's a different size from what's in the diff.
