Need to replace my Nitro Rustler engine **HELP**
I have an older Nitro Rustler from 2003. Over the years my sons have dropped it in the pool and thrashed it. Now that they're older they're into RC trucks and appreciate them. I'm looking to replace the 2.5 engine it has. I know Traxxas has the upgrade plan but can you guys recommend a few different engines. I'm even willing to downgrade to a .15 engine to save a few bucks. I really don't need it to go 50 mph.
Also, if I were to downgrade, would I have to replace other parts? I'd imagine I would.
Thanks.

RE: Need to replace my Nitro Rustler engine **HELP**
Check out one of Dynamite's rear exhaust .12s. They should have one with a pullstart and a slide carb, and their cheap ones are very reasonably priced. You shouldn't need more than just a new header to fit the new engine. Take that with a grain of salt, since it's been a long time since ThunderbirdJunkie has installed a non-Traxxas engine in a Traxxas car.
If you put a Pro .15 you'll need a new clutch pilot nut, a new header, and to screw with the throttle linkage. ITBJRC the 3.3 is $110 and the 2.5 is $90 with the engine trade in.

[link=http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/mach-2-19t-traxxas-replacement-engine-DYN0700]This[/link] is a direct replacement if you want to retain the EZ start and keep the stock manifold, it's a pretty good motor too.
[link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGGP6&P=0]Here[/link] is an OS 18CV-RX, which is hands down, a better motor than the 2.5. You will need a side exhaust header, like [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCPR9&P=7]this[/link], and a pilot shaft nut like [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLR79&P=7]this[/link]. You need the header for the side exhaust, and the nut for the short shaft crank. If you found an SG shaft rear exhaust engine, like [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSCN2&P=0]this[/link] (good motor), you would need a header like [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUTG4&P=7]this[/link], which would require a [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCPX8&P=7]manifold spring[/link].
It's basically just up to what you want to do. You dont really have to pay that much for the Traxxas manifolds, you can find generics on ebay or Tower Hobbies for a bit cheaper. There are other engines out there that will drop in like the Dynamite, like the OS 21TM... but those start to get pretty expensive.

Good to know about that Dynamite engine for when the Slayer's 3.3 croaks...but how does the stock manifold bolt to the engine? It looks like a standard rear-exhaust port.

Duly noted...thanks for the heads up. ThunderbirdJunkie has never had a bad experience with an SH-manufactured engine and the 3.3 is on its last legs.

I have a traxxas ustler nitro pro 15 and I'd like to know what are good and bad things about this car it's suppose to be 20 years old but I don't think it is. Just want to know cool things other people did to theirs.
