Do you intend to race at a local club? Are you trying to find a used truck or are you looking at new ones too? I know you were looking at the 4x4 Slash but, do you prefer 2wd or 4wd?

If you're only considering used, then it kinda depends on what's available. Check the local CL ads, the ads here on RCU and Ebay. You might find something there. Put a want ad on CL or RCU and see if you get some legitimate offers.

As far as the trucks go there are many great brands but some are more popular choices than others depending on what drive type you are looking for. I prefer Associated and their SC10 is available in both 2wd and 4wd. New, they start at $299 RTR and go up from there. My brother and his wife race HPI Blitz's which are 2wd. There are many similarities to my SC10 and both of their trucks drive extremely well.

You can get the Losi XXX-SCT 2wd (although with brushed motor)RTRfor $200. You may be able to find a better deal online somewhere if you do some searching.

No race clubs, Yet anyway. Looking for 4x4.
More bashing at a track then actual racing.

I don't know much about it, but you can check out the ARRMA fury. I've heard some good things, and its definitely not as pricey as traxxas

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...-w-24GHz-Radio

HPI is becoming the parts distributor in October for that model so if you can get HPI parts you can get parts for it. Would change the esc and motor though to a BL setup. Also once HPI starts shipping it they probably will add a $100 to that price tag

cheap, fun, durable....ECX torment.
under $180 RTR.
Only does 25mph out of the box....but plenty of torque so it accelerates quicly.

Comes with a much better radio than most RTR's in the sub $200 price range.

Could be upgraded to brushless for $60-$80 with a cheap system from hobbypartz.com.

I own the torment as well as the ECX boost. Ive been impressed with the durability of both.

Compared to the traxxas slash 2wd (brushed version) which is a fair bit more costly, the torment is a good deal.
The slash is waterproof and faster in a striaght line (out of the box)
But on most any track the torment (agian, box stock) will toast the slash. It has better tires and just plain handles better. IMO, it looks better too.

And you can often find a decent used torment for under $150 shipped. Add in a brushless system (and sell the stock brushed setup to recoupe some $) and you have a fast, durable SCT for hardly over $200.

Sounds like a deal. You can't go wrong with with a slash 4x4 especially an ultimate. My slash 4x4 is just the basic only a few upgrades and out been running strong for about 2 years.

New, that truck sells for around $520, give or take. If it's still pretty clean then you did well. Even better if the seller tossed in a LiPo pack and some spare parts.
