Default What's with scale?

I've been wondering this for a while: What's the deal with scale? What I'm getting at is, I've got an Evader. It's a 1/10-scale stadium truck. It's about 16" long. Compare that to a 1/10 scale short course truck like a Slash which is 22" long. Then, compare that to a 1/8-scale buggy. Again that one is also about 22in long. Is a "real" stadium truck (IS there such a thing?) actually smaller than a short course truck?

Or, is the Evader, Rustler, and Pheonix really considered more 1/12-scale, and the 1/10-scale designation a misnomer?
