I had one from an old iron track bowie (piece of crap i know) that had a connector with a lip on the side of it, and that one wouldnt work. i even tried trimming it so it would fit and it didnt go through, is there some kindof setup i need to do?

No basically any 3 wire servo should work if you plug it in right as the signal to control it is a standard. That is assuming the servo, and receiver work.
Channel 1 is steering, channel 2 is throttle, channel 3 is the aux button (if your radio has it)
Generally is black wire to the outside on the RX's I've used
