Question Medium Compound Big Knobby 2.2 Buggy Tires

Like the title suggests, I'm looking for tires (rear) that will wear better than what I normally use.

I've been using up my supply of soft comp. tires (Losi Step-Pins; Panther Step-Pins; Pro-Line Bow Tie, and Hole Shots). I get anywhere from 2 ~ 6 runs on a set of rear tires . Left to right in the picture is: Bow-Tie (6 runs); Hole Shot (2 runs), and Panther Step-Pins (6 runs).

My backyard track is a mixture of redish clay/dirt imbedded with tiny pebble sized ~baseball sized rocks. Somebody show me the way to a great medium compound 2.2 buggy tire please. I only wish Pro-Line would make a Gladiator tire for buggies as that is my favorite tire at the moment on my ST platforms.

I've been testing, at the moment, some rear knobby tires I found on eBay...

they are what feels to be a medium compound tire, probably from a "cheapish" 1/10 scale buggy. The is no sidewall markings on them either. With the first two battery packs ran through my B4 buggy, I still have all the lugs attached (that's a good thing) with some signs of the lugs/spikes being worn down.

Usually I have a lug or two missing after the first battery pack.

So far so good with these new found tires. If I get up to the "10 runs on them mark" and still have tread left, I will be very pleased. These tires are my last attempt to justify my B4 staying in one piece! Any tire less than great on my track...and the B4 is on the "chopping block"... literally.

A couple of more packs ran through the B4 and the new tires...

5 packs total now and starting to really show signs of wear. But I must say the new rubber is outlasting any other tires that I have used on my track. By now, most of the other tread patterns would have been missing half (if not more) of their knobs/lugs.

How about testing these proline tires http://www.prolineracing.com/tires/d...gy-rear-tires/
Maybe they will not work amazingly but they will sure last longer.

Yes I just might have to try them one day. The only reason I never went with that tread pattern is that they look more of a street type of tire to me.

Default Update

I'm finally getting around to posting the pics of the 12th run on my latest set of tires that I found on eBay.

As you can see, a knob/lug/spike has left the tire carcass, but a good amount of tread still is left for a few more runs.
Anyone know the manufacture of the tire or the vehicle they were made for? I'm guessing along the lines of a discontinued RedCat or HiMoto or HSP model.

Another tread pattern to test...another $5 and change +free shipping eBay find... of course. They feel medium-ish and the foams are junk, but I placed the open celled black pieces of crap inside the tires anyway, just to amuse myself .

Again,
I'm guessing along the lines of a discontinued RedCat or HiMoto or HSP model that these were once made for.
Anyone seen this rubber on a RC car before?

Update: First run and I have all lugs accounted for . These might be my best bet yet! My thinking is the lugs are wider/bigger; which will not allow them to be torn off as easily as the other tire in the above post(s).

Update: I knew I seen that tread on a buggy somewhere in all my journeys on the www...the DHK Hobby's Wolf

Hey Rusty, you mean PL doesn't make a Gladiator in a buggy tire? They make one for Short Course. You'd think they'd make one in the buggy style. With the right wheel choice, you could still use the 2.2 ST style tire. No?

Huh! Yer right, they don't. I just looked. Odd. You'd think they'd sell a lot of them in the "sportsmen" (read:"basher") class. But since they don't offer it, have you tired the Calibers? I just put some on my 4wd SCT and they've got amazing grip on swept-dirt/dry-clay. I've been running the Gladiators and liked them, until the first level of knob wears off, then they're not so good unless you have a moist surface. The Calibers essentially have the same size pins all the way down to the carcass. Medium compound should give decent wear despite smaller pin size. I hope.

The only prob Rob...no M2 medium compound in the Pro-Line Calibers . I've even emailed Pro-Line with concerns that the Gladiator line of tires going to the discontinued page like the Badlands 2.2" truck/crawler tire is now on.
I've gone to almost every RC maker looking at 2.2" RTR buggy tires as they are almost always medium compound.
One knobby tire that shows promise is RedCat Racing/Maverick/HPI Racing. The pictures below are what looks to be the same tire, but how I stummbled upon them is weird. Left picture RedCat Racing site, and the tire on the right...HPI Racing in the UK under the Maverick brand .

But for now I'll go with the latest DHK buggy tires that I am testing.

EH? No Calibers in M2? http://www.prolineracing.com/short-c...-medium-tires/
I've got them on my SCT.

The Proline 2.2 Badlands wear really slow. I run em on my Evader and 80% they're slipping from excessive power and throwing stones/dust. I also do a lot of asphalt running, such as donuts, drifting, and speed runs. I've had them since last summer and probably won't need a new set until next spring. I've been very happy with them and they're plenty knobby.

Pro-Line Badlands 2.2" ...are discontinued. Calibers M2 (medium compound)...discontinued. Sure, you may still find them being sold, but I'm looking down the road a bit further; contemplating my next move.

The response I got back from Pro-Line's Customer Service was a hard chuckle/LOL moment for me. After I went through and basically asked them to stop discontinuing medium compound tires, as they are needed in the real world of buggy enthusiasts outside the racing scene, I got this reply..."How about blockade # 8231-02 here is a link..http://www.prolineracing.com/tires/b...gy-rear-tires/.". LOL. Those tires won't last me a day of hard running; they are an upgraded Holeshot IMO, which I loved at one time. I guess I'll have to settle for the fact that Pro-Line doesn't care about 1/10 buggy bashers out there. Even Pro-Line's Champion 1.6" XTM Off-Road Rear Tires for the "classic" RC10 had a short lived return and left again. Meh.

I'll move on now from this subject and enjoy running my buggy without the company that I always looked at first for my tire needs. I still like the slim pickens they have in M2 compound for other platforms besides 1/10 buggy, and hope the downward spiral discontinuation of popular treads stops.

DHK Hobby OEM tire maker...keep 'em coming!

Tower has them here in M2 compound - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXTYP0&P=ML Not sure why Pro-line has them listed as discontinued. I might be stocking up on these soon...

Yeah, I always like the Badlands. I just wish Pro-Line would make them for a 1/10 buggy. I might even try some Badlands on the Yeti once I wear through the stock kit's Falkens.

I've finally reached the 12th run mark on the latest set of Unknown Brand tires. These are the tires that are saving my B4 from being parted out and sold. Heck, I might even have to break down and build the B4.2 FT kit that I couldn't sell/give-a-way a few months back .

I can't say enough good things about them. Sure I don't get all the traction like a big $$$ soft compound step pin that I was use to. I adjusted my driving style a bit, and turned down the EPA a few clicks ...these tires just amaze me. After doing a 3 min long donuts on the last run the tires still have about approx. 95% of the tread still on them. I can now enjoy running my buggy, and not having to tell my wife, "Well that was a joyful, $18 down the drain, twenty minute event out there." every time I go outside to the track.

Wait, what? You have a B4.2 factory team kit you haven't built, and, tried to give away??? For the love of God, WHY??

Let me set the story straight...

I had a winning bid for the B4.2 FT on my favorite auction site; that was about 3 years ago. My plan was to take a all decked out Factory Team kit and get back into the whole mod buggy racing scene again. Long story short....Time goes by. Work is busy, busy, busy. Sunday mornings come around; I don't want to travel over an hour, one way, just to race on my one day of the week that I have off. The track I built for myself in my backyard was more for my stadium truck to run on. This was so I didn't have to travel to get my RC thrills. After getting bored with the Evader (yes it is possible ), I whipped out my bruised and battered over powered B4 retired "racer". I had so much fun with it...I forgot all about the new B4.2 FT kit sitting inside the house.

A couple of months ago I had the B4.2 FT for sale and nobody even made an offer. I was willing to let it go cheap (hence me saying...I couldn't give it away).

Now that I have some rubber options, as was the original goal here in this thread, my fun meter went off the charts when driving my very nimble, yet sketchy buggy platform again. It may even inspire me to finally build the Associated 2wd REAR motor FT Big Bore beauty.

I'm 'All About That Bass'.

While I was searching for time-frame when the B5 came out, I found a picture with a new B5 buggy sporting some real off-road tires.
Now this is what buggy tires should look like...haha.

I had to laugh, 'cause that picture shows my favorite new tire.

Y'all can stick them Bar Codes; Typos; Electrons, and Dirt Webs up your you know what.
Just kidding. If I had a racing facility near by to enjoy my hobby/addiction on; with a high bite smooth clay track, I too would be sporting some overpriced pieces of rubber with no tread on them.

Wow, you don't get much wear on them. Still lots of tread. You run in soft dirt of some kind?
The stuff we drive on is pretty abrasive. Easily wear out a set of Glads in 6mo. (With Glads I consider "worn out" to be "starting to get thru the second block", depending on conditions.)

Track is pebble infused dirt. It gets a layer of of loamy stuff after a few runs with RC8 and BigBlocks tires. I've toned down my RCs and/or I'm trying to find the best Kv range for optimum traction using medium compound tires. When I first started out with backyard track, I was using 5700kv & 4300kv motors and soft rubber. Slowly moving to limiting the motors and soft rubber...still was ripping lugs from tire carcass. Now I am down to using 17.5T and 13.5T-ish motors and medium compound rubber.

The last picture made it look like more tread than what actually is there. So I removed the pic. Wheels are beat, and probably won't get reused again with a third set of tires.

I'm still on the lookout for other medium compound tires with larger sized lugs. The current tread in use comes in at just under $6 shipped. I did receive some of Pro-Line's blue closed cell foam inserts. Those will be used in the next round of mounted rubber.
