Vintage Kyosho HiRider II Corvette motor upgrade options
Hi.
My 11 Year old son was given a Kyosho HiRider II Corvette.
We test ran it with 1100 NiCad batteries just to see if it worked.
We need to replace other things like tires and such, so this was only a quick test.
This is my son's first step into hobby grade RCs. He has plenty of consumer models.
He took the vette for a test ride and said it was slow. So for Christmas, I want to hop up the car a little bit.
I have already bought some 7.2V 5000mah NiMH batteries.
Next I want to upgrade the motor but WOW its a jungle out there. I can research for hours on end and get completely lost on what to get.
I know the car has the original Mabuchi 550 motor RS-550SH and mechanical speed control.
I want to give the car some more speed, but I don't want to melt the stock gears in the tranny.
I think going brushless is a waste on this car, because if I blow something up, it will be hard to find replacement parts.
Also, this is not going to be his primary Christmas gift. I also got him a Nitro Smaxx that he knows nothing about.
Can anybody give me some reasonably priced motor recommendations for making this car go faster?
Thanks

Lol, you're one awesome parent! Yeah, you can. I'm thinking a weak brushless system like a 17.5 will give him the punch he needs. As well as a new transmitter. Also, not sure if you want this, but I'll send you guys some Atomik/Venom stickers to dress up that new Smaxx and HiRider! Only thing I ask, is for pictures in return.

Thank you for the solid recommendation. I wasn't sure if a brushless would be too much, but a mild brushless does sound like a great idea.
I can do the transmitter at a later date (right now it is a trade off with adding the 4 X 4 kit to the Smaxx). What would be the advantages of a 2.4 GHz transmitter? Faster response and better range?
The body of the Hi Rider has been painted an ugly dark green. I plan on painting it black with silver windows, so it is going to be very plain looking. Stickers would be awesome.
Pics would not be a problem.

Yep, you pretty much nailed it. As well as it being lighter, using less batteries, having multiple RCs bound to one transmitter, and built-in failsafes in case of a loss of signal.
