Default FM or AM radio

Is a fm radio really worth the extra cost?

welll if u go 2 a "BL" system get a "FM" radio cuase if u don't ur car will glitch like "MAD" i've seen happen!!... but if ur jus a basher it doesn't really matter it's jus that "FM" is clearer than "AM"!... it's like the radio in cars... FM radio stations sound better then AM stations!... same with r/c car radios...!!!! i run a futaba 2pl it's am and it works great 4 me in my evader!!! i donno (IMO) it's not worth it!!![X(]

That depends on where you live. When I was racing cars all my radios were AM (original KO Propo EX-5s) and I never experienced any glitches.

That said, there's no doubt that FM is better. And you can get a Hitec Aggressor 3Ch with 1 servo for 77 bucks at Tower Hobbies. That's not bad at all. I have an older Hitec Lynx in FM and it works great.

I've never had any trouble with AM - the Futaba 2PL is a great tx for a great price. It has most all the features of a higher priced FM tx and it's a lot less $$$. I wouldn't spend the money for anything more unless you just want the latest and greatest, need a 3rd channel, or have trouble with AM.

Probably. However, a properly installed AM system will have a range of 1/2 mile. Range checks on just about every radio type (AM, FM, surface, air) consist of verifying control at 100 ft with the antenna down.

Remember that at 300 ft (the other side of a football field) you can barely even see an RC car. 1/2 mile is 2,640 ft.

For many years it has been the case that you can control an RC model well beyond your ability to see it.

I just bought a 2PL today and I love it, specially the 10 model memory feature, that more than my expensive airplane radio, and you can't beat the price.
