RE: Mystery Solved! How to select the proper gearing for your electric RC!
Skrappy, I got your article and it looks very good. We need some pics or something to spice it up. Anyone got a few hundred spur gears lying around that they can snap a picture of? I have a grand total of 6 lol.. I do have like 20 pinions I could take a picture of..
I've got an idea, gimme 5 minutes..

And here we go.. Thing this illustrates which is which? We have to dumb it down so anyone can understand it. It would be nice to assume no one worried about gearing would be confused as to which gear was which, but you can never underestimate a newbie.. lol
And yes guys, I'm aware that I've butchered that Losi motor guard.. You should too

12.18 sounds about right for an ST, but it depends on the tires your running.
Nice [8D]
Ive always like gibsons (wish they werent so expensive [X(]) but my grandpa likes strats (he has 3 of them).
(disregaurd the stuff in the background of this pic)

Why disregard it? I've owned practically every item there at one point or another, cept for the MXR pedal.

The stock Evader gearing, for the photon is deliberately undergeared. It is done so to compensate for the lack of performance of the Photon motor. You will do better to tinker with the pinion gear to get a baseline. From there, you can fine tune it with a new spur gear.

I think I'm going to edit the article, and use your speed calculator verbatim. It's alot less convoluded than my explaination. Although we get the same results, yours is easier to understand.

Skrappy,
I hope the calculator is doing its job accurately. If not, let me know and I can change it.

Speedo,
It just occurred to me that the Gear Ratios for a bunch of cars area already in our [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/product_guide/carguide.cfm]Product Guide[/link]. I'm adding a link to the GearWizard now.

Micheal, I looked at the product guide and I couldn't find the list. Got a direct link for it?

RE: Mystery Solved! How to select the proper gearing for your electric RC!
do u think u could make a gear calculator that kinda like this?
motor rpm: 40,000
pinion size: 19
spur size: 87
transmission ratio: 2.66
tires size (mm): 124
top speed = 37.4 mph
roll out = 12 mm
that would be kool so like u kinda have a base line 2 see how fast ur car is goin! it won't be 100% acrurate but jus 2 give u an idea!?[X(]

w00t!! thanks skrapiron and everyone's contribution to this! I've been struggling with this scary gear ratio for a long time, searching for information on the web, but still don't know what gear ratio should I use with different motors. now i've a rough idea of what should I do can wait to fine tune my TRF415 with my 9T motor...

changss, use Skrap's forumla to get in the ballpark, then fine tune it by feeling of the motor after a few laps.. You should be able to hold your finger on the can for 5 seconds without having to pull away. If it's that cool, you are golden. If it's hotter, you need to drop a tooth and try again. Don't forget to check it, cuz a hot mod like a 9t can go south REALLY fast from the heat.

woooooo~~ yes you are right, just tried it out today, and the motor got soooooo hot (burning!![X(]) after a few mintues... well, i put on a pinion with "some extra teeth"... I guess I should start from the recommanded solution =P

That's the Idea. Use the formula as a BASELINE. Then, you can fine tune your performacnce, up or down, depending on the conditions that you are running under.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

OK. This formula seems very well put together and useful.
My question is........
How do i apply this to what type of motor im running. If i want my number to be as close to 0 as possible, what makes gearing my 10turn different from gearing my 27turn???
I Hope i explained my question properly.

RE: Mystery Solved! How to select the proper gearing for your electric RC!
It does not matter what motor you select. Follow the gearing selector. The speed of your truck/buggy is determined by the RPM of the motor, not the gearing selected. If you over-gear, even a low turn motor, you may gain a few mph more, but increase the risk of damage to your motor, esc and battery. The Formula is INDEPENDENT of the motors number of turns.
