Default RE: Lunchboxer's TXT-1 project...

Hi, greetings from Germany.

I have read all the pages of this thread... it needed some time. Since I bougt an TXT-1 I am very interested in modifying my TXT-1. So I mounted the lower links on top of the axle-cases because I thought the distance of the lower links to the ground should be bigger. I also mounted the ball connectors for the cantilever links on the axle guard one hole more to the front/rear for a longer wheelbase.
Next I'd like to mount metal skid plates (front/middle/rear), add a wheely-bar and move the steering servos on top of the differential gear boxes. I'm also thinking of adding a ball connector brace on the gearbox.

Why didn't anyone of you mount the lower links on top of the gearbox, or have you tried?
Did anyone try to mount the servos on the gearboxes?

Can someone pease tell me what was good/bad about above modifications.

Here in Germany the RC-Car / hop-up parts are much more expensive as in USA. Also it is quite complicated to get some special parts ea. drive shafts of the Revo for the TXT-1. Traxxas is still not very commen in Germany and so good parts are almost unavailable and if you have the possibility to get a part its very expensive.

Here I can give you two Youtube liks which I think are amazing. I found them as I was reading this thread and clicked through the Youtube videos. Enjoy it.

The one problem I see with mounting the lower links on the top is that it will increase leverage against the gearbox and put more strain against the gearbox and/or links. This would result in a higher chance of breakage. You do mean the axle gearbox, don't you?

Hi,

can anyone please give me some information/more pics of this car. Im interested in attaching my servos in the same way, but I haven't found the best/easiest way yet without cutting anything off of the axle gearbox.

@The Mad Modder:
yes, I mean the axle gearbox. If you take a look at the pic you can see what I thought of.

Have a nice day

Hi there, welcome!

To do the steering mod, you can custom make the servo mount, or go with something like this from TTR:

http://www.thundertechracing.com/txt1.htm

I have not tried to re-locate the lower link to gain more ground clearance as my TXT is not a crawler. Any time you relocate the link location, you alter the geometry of the suspension. I am not saying the resulting geometry is bad. It is just that I never bother to experiment with it. It probably does not matter to the crawler as they don't go fast enough to worry about suspension geometry (just my guess). For me, I will stay stock for now.

Welcome again. Post some pics of your TXT when you have a chance!!

Hi,

I don't know, but in a certain way I don't like the servo mount from thundertechracing. Do the push rods and the lower arms still have enough space for movement or do I have to attach the damper in another way? I'd like to see more pictures of servo attachment methods without having the servo mounted to the bumper.

Have a nice day

Yeah, that's what I thought. With that setup, there will be a little more of a chance of breakage due to increased leverage. It's still a pretty good setup, just not quite as strong as the original. My only concern would be how the plastic towers that you mounted the lower links to would hold up to serious rock crawling. Upgrading the axle guard mounts to aluminum ones would solve that problem, though. Or you could just remove the little tower(or at least most of it) to increase strength. If the ball stud mounts directly into the axle guard mount, you should be fine. Also, your TXT is looking good.
By the way, it's nice to have a German on here(I'm half German myself), the majority of people here are American, Canadian, or Australian.

Agree.. one of the first mods to do is to put on the aluminum axle guard / mount. Either the Tamiya version or the NewEra ones... !!

YYEEAAHH go Aussie (just thought i'd be patriotic) there isn't that many of us is there?

Nah it matters a fair bit, the last thing you need when trying to use fine control is your suspension giving you hard time when mucking round with suspension there is a lot of things to consider, artic steer, torque twist, squat and anti squat, that isn't to say you shouldn't mess around with it, go for it it's quite fun just tried some myself for the scaler havn't tested it yet though [&o].
Hope to help [8D]

Yeah, I probably mis-spoke, as I am not a crawling expert.. (actually, not an expert of any kind.. unfortunately.. ha!) I just thought that for a crawler, since it is going so slow.. the thing like caster angle, damping of the suspension, etc. isn't as critical as say a higher speed basher.. but thanks for pointing it out... ! My bad assumption!

It's fine, i'm not an expert either, just thought i'd share what i knew. I'v been doing a fair bit of reading on suspension geometry lately for the TLT scaler.
This thread goes into detail about suspension geometry, helped me: http://thecrawlpit.com/forum/viewtop...er=asc&start=0

I found this interesting steering setup, where the link from the servo is connected to the drag link.. instead of to one of the knuckle!

Hi Lunchboxer,

isn't it kind of difficult to mount the servo at this position? I believe the mounts for the axle fixation couldn't be used then. Do you have more pictures or where did you get this one from?

kind regards

Right, I don't think it is meant to work w/ the stock suspension mounting point..

No, I just saw it from another forum.. only one pic..

That thing looks like it weights a ton with that on! It looks like it can barely move with those silvercans and that army shell.

I am sure it will move just fine... stock gearing on the TXT is meant to go pretty slow, so it should be okay..

I don't think that rig with that top heavy setup is meant to do jumps, etc. more like a scale project.. !!

Hi,

actually I think I have found what I was looking for. This seems to be the best solution to attach the servos at the TXT-1 axles. The challenge will be to make the carriers fit because I don't have a drawing yet nor the right tools for building it.

Have a nice day

Yeah, it looks like it is home made.. you probably won't be able to buy those off the shelf.. you will need to do some machining yourself!
