Hopups for it are mostly alloy, but Im not sure, because I dont really think I need much for my daily basher, except a new part once one breaks. I would replace the steering knuckles though, mine broke pretty easily. Im not much for aluminum, but I bought some for $10 shipped from the UK. It handles pretty well, but since it is 2WD, it wont climb over too many things without getting stuck. Make sure he gets a good battery, because it will go faster in my experience.
Building is straight forward, I finished mine in about 4-5 hours, and another hour with painting, stickering, etc.

Well, its this: http://stores.ebay.com/RC-MALL
Sorry, but I said it was the UK, but its Hong Kong. I have seen them on ebay from the UK, though, just do a search. Shipping was only 2 dollars for me, so I didnt mind.

I like the 4wd version of it (twin detonator) I mostly upgrade the speed and dogbones and tires to make a 4wd stadium truck out of them. Bearings are also a nice upgrade. The TD is dog slow when new and increasing voltage speeds it up quite a bit. I think the blackfoot uses same gearing.

My dad had one and said they just rolled. He said the plastic body got murdered from the top heaviness so he got a bigfoot body instead.

It's probably real similar to the LB, slow. The td doesn't understeer any, but is 4wd. I'd recommend it over the blackfoot because you get a whole nother axles, motor, shafts system for the front end and a lightweight body.

Well, I am still trying to shoe horn a 19t motor into ours. I have now ordered Tamiya pinions as the Robinson ones do not fit well - the grub screws fail the spur gear. This seems to be a common problem with pinions, you would think they would be a std design.
Hopefully it will fly on a 20t pinion.

the twin detonator is way to downgeared. a car in that small size with twin 540 motors, could got away with a gear ratio at around 10:1 and still have enough power. but 16-18 ?! why is that? its geared like a farmer tractor or something lol :P

I can recommend a 19t motor in one of these! We are now running a Chameleon Pro with the std 18t pinion and its great. Any ideas on how to fix the tyres? Tamiya do not rec that they are glued and they keep coming off!! (we have rubber bands on the hubs).

Tamiya usually says to not glue any of their tires, so they cannot be blamed for trany failure, or such. I always glue them anyways, especially since I don't usually use silver cans.

RE: Official Tamiya Blackfoot Xtreme
Hey RCLuke,
We have a lot of experience at the shop with the Blackfoot Extreme; it's a great truck for a beginner. You will find the standard truck is fairly rapid; especially off-road. But, as stated, it will get stuck more often than a 4wd. It's a great all-rounder, with a great body on it and the ability to do wheelies as standard (warning: this can destroy the gearbox with a mod motor)
I would not recommend the Twin Detonator or the Double Blaze (the Double Blaze is currently out of production, because the Tamiya people broke the tooling!) Both Trucks are geared badly; and although they have such a lot of power to offer, they get boring quickly. The gearboxes are a bit dodgey with a really low turn motor too, so watch that, I'd say 19T max.
Definately get a Blackfoot, the second most fun chassis in the Tamiya range at the mo. (Second to the Lunchbox/Pumpkin)
Chris.

Interesting, I may do that then, I am just worried about the trans. The rubber band method is pretty good with std power.
