Comm Cutting Advice - Mod vs Stock
I want to start cutting my own comms so I don't have to always rebuild my motors at the track. In looking at lathes I see that there are stock & mod veresions. My son & I race both stock & mod.
What is the difference?
If I get a lathe for mod, can I cut stock?
What do you think of the Cobra Pro Comm Lathe?

Welcome to rcu, I think mine is a Cobra and you probably can't buy a "bad" one.
The main difference in the two is the way the arm is held. A stock lathe holds the whole motor can with arm in a holder and a mod lathe holds only the armature in a set of v-blocks. So you can cut a stock arm on a mod lathe if you remove it. And you can cut a mod arm in a stock lathe if you leave it in the can.

For a stock motor, yes. The end-bells aren't designed to be removed. The mod lathe is best for a mod motor that can be easily taken apart.

That sucks, you can't just leave the arm. in the can like a stock motor? Alot of stock motors are rebuildable now, the CO27 is.

Yes, you can leave the arm in the can and use a stock type lathe. If the motor is rebuildable then you can use either type of lathe.
The difference is in the way the arm is held in place in the lathe.
