Default Soldering Problems. Need Help!

Well, I recently purchased 2 new engines for my rustler and for my stampede (one for each). I attempted to solder them today, and just couldn't get my solder to stick. I was wondering what the problem is here... I am using 60/40 Rosin Core Solder and i tried both a 23-watt pencil iron and another one which was butane and I think it was 30 watts, not sure. Tomorrow I'm going to go to radio shack and purchase a 40-watt iron and new rosin core and hope it works.

The 40w should work great. Make sure when your soldering that your not just melting the solder on the wire tip your melting the solder on the motor prong also so they fuse toghether for tight bond.

i wouldnt use a pencil head soldering iron, use one with a 'flathead screwdriver' head, as this will heat the whole area, and not just a tiny piece of the metal, i think my iron is only 20 or 30 watts, but it works a dream, give it 5-10 minutes to warm up fully.

Thanks for all the help guys, when i'm at radio shack tomorrow I'll check out to see if they have a flat-head one. And i have soldered before, I usually solder systems for concrete for my work, but that uses a 250 watt solder, I don't usually solder on such a small scale as these r/c's!

Heat the object, not the solder as you know. The solder will stick when the object is hot.

Yea I've been using a 40 watt iron for years and it's more than enough for soldering connectors in place. The only time I've needed more power is when trying to de-solder caps off a silver can motor. Believe it or not I've been using that same iron since I was a kid and it was handed down to me by my grandmother who used it when she worked in an electronics shop (probably in the 70's)!!!

I burned my finger so bad, it turned white and never blistered. It took 3 months for it to heal.

I don't solder onto concrete, I make and install systems that dispense a given amount of chemicals to make the concrete, I usually need to solder some stuff in the systems, but the wires are much bigger than these and I use a much stronger Iron because with a 40 watt I'd be there forever. Well, at around 3 oclock I'm going to radio shack, hopefully attempt #2 will get these motors running!

Thanks for all the help everyone

The easiest way I have found to tin high strand wire is to take a piece of solder about 8 inches long, twist it tightly around the stripped end, and hold a soldering iron to the very end where there is no solder.

If the solder really wont stick and just bubbles try using some flux, make sure you dont get plumbing flux and that you clean of any excess flux when done soldering (flux will degrade the strength of a joint over time).

First snip the end of the wire first back to fresh wire and tin it real good. Then clean and tin the terminal second. Finally place the tinned wire end on top of the terminal and apply heat from the bottom of terminal. That way you have all fresh solder and the solder has flowed on both the wire and terminal. Works every time, as long as you use copper wire.
