good inexpensive brushless system?
i want to get a good inexpensive brushless system for an xtm x-cellerator.
i will be using a 6 or 7 cell nimh pack and will be using stock gearing for a while.
i would like to know what people would recommend for a person on a budget of about $150.

Castle Creations' Sidewinder is way cheaper than that $145. or $70. for the ESC alone.

The castle link cable can be found anywhere. If you have a digital camera it probably came with a usb cable that will fit. At least for my mamba there is nothing special about the connection at the esc.

You're not paying for the USB cable. I think you're paying for the little connecting device + the USB cable. My Mamba-25 (for Mini trucks/cars) came without Castle Link. When I bought the Castle Link kit, it came with a USB cable and a small pcb board that plugged into the USB and the Mamba-25 ESC, which then enabled you to download and upload settings from your computer.

The castle link you have to buy for the sidewinder is $20 because your paying for the usb cable that hooks into the esc, AND the castle link software disk from what I understand. All the pictures I've seen online have a disk in it. I could be wrong though

The micro is an 8051-derivative and it has its own firmware that can also be updated as new castle products come out or as new setups are added. For anyone who uses their aircraft ESCs or the 1/18th scale mamba-25 ESC, a castle link is one of the first things you buy and you only need one.
As for VXL vs. sidewinder. VXL is an okay setup but the only thing it has over the sidewinder is the sensor port for use with sensored motors. Sidewinder's can be found as little as $120. online at some places, it cogs less and is more configurable than the VXL if you have the castle link. Both companies have solid customer service. Power is roughly comparable, 5700 w/ a 2-cell LiPo has a little less than the VXL w/ a 3-cell but the 4600 w/ a 3-cell has more than the VXL on 3-cells.

Seeing how the Sidewinder is cheaper than the VXL, I don't see a contest between the two....

Remember guys. You only ever need to buy the one Castle Link. Then you add as many Sidewinders as you want!
Some of the VXL Fan Boy's make out as if you need a Castle Link for every motor! Simply not the case!
As against everything Traxxas as I am, I would be the first to say that <$140 for a VXL is brilliant value for money. Just as good value for many as <$130 would be for a Sidewinder system.

Yep, that's the beauty of it. I have 4 CC speed controllers between my planes, helicopters, and now cars. With that one $20 outlay I can tweak each one specifically for my setup.
By the way, the software is free. Just go to Castle Creations web page and download it.

Best bang for the buck right now got to be the Sidewinder 5700kv combo!
I tested it out last night and it was quite good in terms of cogging issue.. (i.e., not really noticeable)
For those who don't need the 6900/7700 speed, it is a great deal..
For budget system if you want to go sensored route, I'd recommend the Novak XBR 8.5

Ah ok, glad someone corrected me
How come nobody suggested this to me

Especially if you are not planning 3S LiPo. For 2S or 6 Cell the XBR is a brilliant little system. Smooth as butter, very good run times and absolutely zero problems with heat!

Did you ask?!
Yeah, the XBR 8.5 is a very nice system.. sensored, so it has no cogging at all.. and can provide strong power starting..

Because the Sidewinder and the Mamba Max both have much more power, and you said that you will probably go LiPo later. Then you woul dhave had to replace the XBR in anycase!. Besides, the XBR almost 20% more expensive than the Sidewinder.
