Default RE: The Official Traxxas Slash short-course race truck

Went last night and clocked my Slash with a radar gun...

Mods:
15/90 Gearing
MM5700
2s Lipo
ESC MM detuned all the way

34 MPH was my fastest run did it about 4 or 5 times.

My next move is to start messing with the ESC and 3s Lipo is on its way.

My temps on the motor dont pass 169.38 that was the highest reading i had after 30 minutes of W.O.T.

You guys have any suggestions for me on what I can do to get more speed?

170 is pretty maxed for that 5700...

New motor is the only thing you can do. You push that any harder you'll smoke it.

Why 15/90 gearing?

I have 19 or 21/86 and its way faster than that

On the Castle Website it says 200 degrees...and for the sake of just wanting to see what is the fastest MPH I can get i am sure that making one pass or two passes i wont fry anything if i tune it up a bit. I am making a Excel Data sheet once i am done with it i will post it up should take me about a month to get all the data in but it will pretty cool to see what each mod or tweak has done to get the Slash up in higher Speeds. I am taking everything into consideration from wheel and tire combo to gear sizes the temperature to even the settings on my ESC and other factors to try to get the best detail data.

Any suggestions on gearing? i was thinking maybe 12 pinion? would a bigger spur be possible i am running 90.

you know if you increse both gears....you're not really gearing up, lol. (depending on how much you increase each gear, etc.) Throw in the stock 86T spur, and that should push quite a bit higher.

Faster = Big pinion / small spur
Quick accel = big spur / small pinion

of course for the most part, the faster set up will heat up faster, and put more strain on the motor.

As for your question, 90T spur is the biggest you can use the gear cover with, and I think it's the biggest one traxxas makes for the slash(?).

Well to go any faster you'll have to gear up or add voltage. You can run 3s on that 5700 for more speed but it'll most likely nuke the motor in terms of heat. FYI just because Castle says 200 degrees it's not a target and nor is it good for the motor to run anywhere near that. If you don't demag the motor and knacker the esc in one big bang, you'll gradually kill it through inefficiency. For heavens sake, another motor isn't expensive just get a cheap, low kv one and run 3s!

I'm running a 2350kv XL motor with 80a esc on 4s geared for 75mph and it goes all day long without so much as a blip on temps. The entire setup cost me like $160. And it'll be more powerful than any mamba max motored anything anywhere.

Changing from 90 spur to 86 only adds around 1.2 mphs , now changing a tooth on the pinion is a little more drastic around 3-5 mph. Spur sizes are mainly to fit more variety of pinion. On page 67 or 66 someone posted a relative-speed calculator that you can play around and see how much a tooth here and there changes.

try a 90t spur and see how it goes. it cant hurt anything. i used 19t pinion and a 90t spur with my 12t titan and the temps stay down

i have a question, whats a good replacement motor for the slash that will be about the same speed as the stock motor? (a little better acceleration wouldn't hurt ether) i am thinking the reedy 17t http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXMUN9&P=ML would this motor work? also what are some good upgrade shocks that dont leak and have better dampening?
