RE: drive me mad
If there is still wire then you should be able to solder to it. Just add a little more wire to it so its not so short. Put the deans on the new wire first.
Just tin the 2 ends that you want to solder together then put a dab of flux on them and put the 2 wires end to end and hit it with the iron for a second or 2 and tyhe 2 wires will be soldered together. Then jus hit it with some electrical tape.
Soldering wire together in a tight spot is easier than trying to do the deans in a tight spot.

Kind of difficult to see what you are asking us? You are unsure if you should solder the dean's back on? I would if I were you, find someone who can solder and it should be a breeze for them and take no time.
How did the Dean's plug come off before? A good solder joint is near impossible to separate.

RE: drive me mad
You should remove the electronics that you are soldering from the vehicle.
Also take some time and watch this: [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYhmzY5wQAA&feature=related]How to solder Deans Connectors[/link]

Ya you should deffinetly remove the esc from the vehicle to do soldering work. You could end up hitting something with the iron andcause more problems.

Another vote for removing the ESC.
Make sure you have a nice soldering iron, and a good tip. A marginal soldering setup will not work for Deans. Some can get cheap irons to work, I can, but not well. I have used various high end soldering stations at the track, and those things make soldering a breeze.
