$500 bucks at Harbour Freight will buy you a fun lathe. Check out http://www.mini-lathe.com/ for tons of info.

Yep, that's the biggest trouble spot at the moment. That small, open spot on the chassis is where the battery is going to go. The pack I had for the last version (the Rover 6) will actually fit right into that spot. I'm thinking of possibly stacking a few small Li-po packs in that area too. It's not going to the leave a lot of room for big capacity, big voltage packs of any kind, but at least there is room for something. Maybe I'll widen that spot later and add some differently configured packs.
Oh, just to clarify the Rover 6 had a 2X3 "brick" pack:

Progess is going slower than I'd like, but I finally got one of the shock tower brackets done today. I should have time to post pictures later today.
The last two weekends I have spent mostly trying out my new TIG welder, and the weekend before that I was busy keeping the basement from flooding due to all the rain the Chicagoland area got. Going to keep at the Triclyde though, and little by little it should get done.

Here's the bracket. After screwing it down I notice that the gearbox also isn't quite flat on top. The bracket has to flex about 1/16" before it touches both sides. Once the shock tower is mounted to it, the piece should be much, much more ridgid and press the bulge back into the gearbox.
Just another aspect of Traxxas engineering that makes me fret less over tiny imperfection in my own work.

Just to bump this thread, I got the second bracket done today. More aggressive cuts and a little less worry about tolerances have made it go quicker than the first.

After putting the project on hold for a while, I've decided to pick it up again. I was thinking of getting a big, fast truck (like e-savage or e-maxx) and I remembered the $200 or so I already sank into parts for this project.

Squaring up the plates to be used for the shock tower/servo bracket. Double sided tape is holding all three together surprisingly well. I may leave them that way for the whole process.

ORIGINAL: Kitsune
No, it's only 4WS, at the two far ends. I just figured I'd simplify things and cut all three plates the same time.

Yeah, that idea has crossed my mind before. Maybe as a future add on. Right now I'm looking to get the bare minimals built just to get the thing moving.

The servos (Hitec hs-77BB) came in today. I forgot that they have to put in at an angle to clear the cord, so I'll have to remove some more material from two of the shock towers. Otherwise, they'd fit like a glove.

I took off about .010" and with a little squeezing to get it past the case gaskets that stick out a little, magnaged to fit in in the slot. As you can see, it's a pretty close fit.

Here's one of the steering ends mounted to the gearbox. Still a lot of little things to do to it before it can be test run.
That stupid bulge in the top of the gearbox has slightly warped the nylon bracket. After having it sit on the truck for a day or two I removed the mounting bracket from the plate to tap out some holes. Putting it back on again revealed the near perfect fit I had between those two parts is no more. It still works, but the quirks about these gearboxes are irritating at times. [:@]

With the holes now tapped out, the other servo is mounted.
Now on to building the posts for the bell crank steering, and dust off my under used lathe.
