You should upgrade to the new style hubs. They use larger 5x11x4 bearings. They don't wear out nearly as fast as the small bearings that fit in the old style hubs. I figured that out after I locked up all 8 bearings 3 separate times in a matter of a few months. (that's 24 bearings at $2.50 each)

Don't get the puny 5x8x4mm bearings. They won't last long at all. Get the beefier 5x11x4mm bearings and they will last you a good while. If you plan on using the 5x11x4mm bearings, you will need to upgrade your bearing carriers to accomodate the larger diameter 5x11mm bearings.

Here's what you will need:

RPM front bearing carriers:

RPM rear bearing carriers:

Duratrax 5X11X4mm ball bearings (10):

You don't necessarily absolutely need these, but it's a good idea to stock up on a few of these because they bend easily:
2.5mm x 31.5mm vertical kingpins:

If you do a search on eBay for VXL bearings carriers, you'll find a good price on a complete set of the larger bearings, blocks and axle.

Beraing upgrade was my first hop up, and best in my opinion!
I also got the hubs.
