I agree to do a little more with the battery mounting. I had a lipo battery fly out of my crt and ruined a cell that way.

Just a word of advice, I would put some more padding on that tray and put ends on it, just bolting on some lexan or aluminum ends would be good. Because if you jump it and land hard on the front or rear the battery will slide off. Better to be safe than sorry, so just put end caps on both ends of it, maybe even redo the tray with C channel aluminum so you have 2 sides on it then bolt ends on it as well.
I agree. I would have for sure put some end aluminum on it. If I were making it I would have made it in kind of a T shape and then fold up the sides and the back leaving only one end open to put the battery it. Or just don't leave any ends open and just make it a box without a lid. Don't rely on velcro to hold anything anywhere. Unless it is some good straps that you can strap around the whole pack to keep it from sliding.

Even if you have several straps it wont hold. And remember that the velcro straps can slide and move, so like Fuse said, don't rely on them to hold anything, however I wouldn't rely on them even with 3 or 4 of them. Just make a new tray with C channel aluminum and bolt some ends onto it.

Just make a whole new one with 4 sides and a bottom. Then cut some slots in the top and use some velcro straps, heavy duty ones. I use some align ones from my hobby shop and they work great.

An E-maxx tranny would work good except for the fact that because you have that big 5S pack on 1 side, you need the motor on the other to help balance it out a bit, plus the E-Maxx tranny would put the motor up pretty high. Put the motor any closer to the right and your handling will suffer, same goes for raising it up.

Eating spurs? Is your mesh way off? My pinion is only touching about half of the spur because the shaft on the motor I'm using is too short, but I have yet to strip one spur. And that is on 4s and it has enough torque to pull wheelies at any speed.
