Am I undergeared?
I have a slash with the Sidewinder ESC with the 5700kv motor and I'm running 14/90 gearing. The ESC was around 115 degrees F and the motor was around 200 degrees F and was at 230 before I gave it a little break.

RE: Am I undergeared?
One of the most important factors when discussing speed/gearing is the voltage since the speed is directly related to voltage. Twice the voltage will run nearly twice the speed (if it isn't geared too high and on the edge of max speed)
An example may be two identical set-ups running on 6 volts vs. 12 volts. If the gearing is close for 6 volts then it may be geared up twice as much as is necessary.

Is 115 hot for an ESC because i hear if the motor is getting really hot and the ESC is cool your undergeared. I don't know what a comfortable temp is for an ESC just the Motor (160-170)

115 isn't too much for an esc. I can't seem to remember or find the max temp for the sidewinder, maybe 200 or less? 115 isn't even close to the max temp.

you should really have that motor geared 12/90 in a Slash. Problem is I think the damage is already done. Max operating temps for those motors are listed at 200F but you should never run one over about 170F. If you've seen 230F then my guess is the motor is on it's last legs. You will notice it will just begin to run hotter and hotter until it finally just dies. When you replace it go with the 4600 or even bettter the VXL. The Slash is a big heavy truck and these little motors just aren't designed to move them.

I think as long as you don't go over 200F too long, it should be fine.
It is hard to keep temperature down for these Castle motors.

RE: Am I undergeared?
Lets make sure we are talking about the same thing.
18/86 is a higher ratio (faster, bigger, higher) gear than 14/90
dropping voltage, motor rpm , or pinion will slow the vehicle down and make motor cooler.
By comparison your motor turns about 40,000 rpm and is geared 14/90 or 6.43 = 256500
My set up that is not geared too high is 32000 rpm and is geared 14/86 or 6.14 = 193500
Your set-up is going to be a faster vehicle AND run hotter than mine. arbitrary number above represents speed

RE: Am I undergeared?
I thought that a bigger spur makes for less top end, so 14/90 is less top end/more accel making it easier for the motor and 14/86 is more top end/ less accel.

RE: Am I undergeared?
the 5700 runs hot in all my rc's. its made to run and if not geared right it'll get hot quick. gear down, way down. its ok if it gets hot now and then... but u dont't want it to run till it'll hesitate from high temps as i do...i now use the vxl and gear up. the 5700 is too much with the batts that i use. just my opinion....
