Default Can't get mesh right. What am I doing wrong?

I bought a used truggy off of fleabay and then I bought a new MMM 2200kv system. Well I am trying to mesh the gears now and it just doesn't look or feel right. When I spin the spur gear it feels rough like it's too tight, yet when I loosen it at all then there is some play and it seems like the gears are barely touching. This is the best I could do, let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks!

Do this, loosen the mounts a bit so you can move the motor, but not soo loose where the motor doesnt stay in place. Then turn everyhting on and run the motor at a low speed. This will give you a very good mesh and nothing will bind. You can also put a piece of paper inside the gear mesh and tighten down.

Alright that works... I was afraid maybe the pinion to spur gear ratio may have made meshing problems. But if it looks normal to you guys then I am totally fine with it.

It looks like you have mod.8 pinion and a mod1 spur.

That means the gears have different spacing between teeth. I'm guessing about both of them, but if I'm right then it would take getting a mod1 pinion OR a mod.8 spur gear. It is the pitch.

Think guvers right here looks like 2 different pitches tbh
can u post links for the spur and pinion to look over,i wouldnt run it like that or it could cause a lot of uneven wear[]

If you don't know the pitch of either one then it can be found by measuring the diameter and counting the teeth. http://www.scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/_gear_calc.html

I'd rather just get another spur or pinion. If it helps the pinion is the stock one from the Mamba Monster Max system.

It must be a 32 pitch pinion. (the one you have pictured)

And I need a mod1 pinion? Then it should mesh correctly?

Yes, I am 99% sure your spur is a mod1 , but if you want to make sure just measure it against the gear calc. I'm just going by your pic.

Alright thanks. Now I have a 46T spur gear. What would you recommend for a pinion gear tooth count?

Use this calc to find pinion teeth. http://www.scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/_top_speed.html

I don't really want a calculator all I want is some suggestions on common gear ratios. Just something to get me started.

To be accurate one would have to ask all the same info. Most inportant is the voltage and rpm/volt/and gearing. You won't be too far off with 14 tooth gear.

I'll be using a 14.8v 5000mah lipo 4s with a 2200kv motor.

If you want gear ratios and further information you need to put forth some effort and use the calculator. That calculator is the best tool there is for giving rough estimates of top speed. Look up the buggy/truggy diff ratios from a manufactures website or model specific specs sheet, count of look up tooth count of the spur gear. Use your fingers and put the numbers into the calculator. Best info you can get without any information is between 10 and 20 teeth on the pinion.

Edit: if that's the pinion that came with the combo then it's a 32 pitch, how do I know? Castle makes 32-pitch in even teeth numbers, mod-1 in odds.

You could start at 18, since that's the # of teeth on the kit pinion, and move up or down depending on if you want more speed or torque. Since your using such a torquey motor, you'll probably want a relative large pinion to give you some speed.

My spur is a 46t so I bought a 15t mod 1 pinion. I guess I will just play it by ear once I get the truggy together.

And I just finished the calculator and it said I can go 120MPH. I did everything correctly as far as I could tell.

One of your numbers has to be off. I use it when I change my gearing and I don't get numbers like that.
