XL-5 has no power switch per say(only thing I dislike about it). You have to unplug the battery to turn it off or it will drain it. And it supplies voltage the second you plug it in cause the ESC checks to see if there is a signal from the TX getting to the RX, so your vehicle don't run away.

Is your radio AM? Might be interference or a dead crystal.

Depending on how long you've had it, you might be able to get a new one from Traxxas.

My XL-5 has a button. It doesn't come on until I press the power button.

Just ask what he wants for it. He might want $150, but if you offer $75 he might laugh at you. On the other hand if you offer him $125, and he only wanted $75, he just made 50 extra bucks. I probably wouldn't pay more than $125 if it is in like new condition (looks like it just came out of the box) and you can see it work. If there are any scratches or marks on the can, stickers peeling, lots of dirt/dust in the fins of the ESCs heatsink $75 - $100 at most if he ca prove that it's operational.
