RE: brushless systems
last time I checked a good 2S lipo isn't even close to $300, and you can get a really good lipo charger for $100-$150. If you were actually running a 5 turn brushed motor it may be a good idea to get a lipo...
Over the long run a 5 turn brushed motor will be more expensive than brushless after replacing several rounds of brushes and cutting the comm.
So in comparison running brushless isn't that expensive, it's actually cheaper than brushed (especially with the cost of some of the sensorless brushless systems out there)!

RE: brushless systems
oh there's plenty of points for going brushless..........unless you're driving a crawler. Maybe your uncle has a comm cutter at work and he rebuilds your motor every week...........then it might start to make sense.
I'm not saying a 5 turn brushed motor isn't fast, it's faster than stink! But definitely wouldn't make sense in a Slash.

RE: brushless systems
Hahah this thread is funny. A 5t motor will last what, 3-4 runs before it's overheating in that XXXT? I ran a 10t motor in a buggy and it lasted maybe 3-4 batteries before it slowed way down and needed to be cleaned out.
Aces I hate to break it to you, but you've been getting your info from the wrong people, or you've really just shot your mouth off without doing any research about brushless.
Brushless does NOT have to cost $200 for this or $300 for that, etc.
For $300 you can get a good brushless motor, ESC and 2-3s lipo AND charger. AND you can go drive it around without ever worrying about cutting the comm, replacing brushes every 5-10 runs, always the same performance each time out, no wear and tear because there is no comm and brushes. Oh excellent low end torque AND top end, something a 5t brushed motor could only dream of.
Sorry you're living in 1995, time to accept some change i.e. brushless is the way TO go for CHEAP. But do what makes you happy, like you said, it's whatever makes you happy, and if maintaining a hot single digit turn brushed motor is your thing, I say do it. I'll stick to my 2s lipo and brushless motor and run circles around you while you are already on your 3rd heavy 6-8 cell Nimh pack that's overheating trying to supply that amp guzzling 5-7t motor. There how's that for generalities?
