I have the same issues the sucker HATES some radios and will refuse to work with them no matter what.
If you read the FAQ in the manual it says to set the EPA and ATV to 120% (if your radio supports it, mine don't)
Pretty much you probably will need a new radio or return/resell it and get a different ESC made by a company that doesn't do retarded things for calibration like castle.
I'm currently going to try a Flysky 2 chan 2.4ghz radio (heard it will work with it, btw its the brand that makes the HK radios) if it don't work with that mine will be up on ebay.

Try turning the radio off with battery plugged in and turn on radio. One of mine won't work if the radio is on first but will when the battery is plug into the esc. first.

ok i hook it up to my spektrum 2.4 radio and the calibration worked fine. but the steering is messed up. the wheels are turned to the right so i put the steering trim all the way to the left and the wheels still pointt to right and dont steer much to left but do to the right

disconnect the servo arm. turn the car and radio on set trim to 0 then reconnect servo arm to servo with the wheels pointing straight. Is this a new car?
