Havoc 3S with Ballistic 8.5T won't stop overheating
I've got a Havoc 3S with Ballistic 8.5T installed in a HPI Cyber 10B running off a Ptotek RC 3300mAh 3-cell 25C geared as low as I can (16/84) (it's painfully slow). After a few minutes of running, even if I run it soft, the blue and red LEDs start blinking "possible ESC thermal shutdown", the ESC and motor are barely warm when this happens. It also ran fine on a 6-cell NiMH. I have been in contact with Novak and have even sent it in and they have been no help. My LHS also has been unable to provide any solutions. I'm getting desperate, I really need some help.

8.5 is very fast geared right on 2S. Why do you feel the need for 3S if its giving you problems?

Is there binding anywhere in the drivetrain? That's the first thing you should check.

Jason, it definitely sounds like you're under-geared. There are no bigger spur options so you can drop to a smaller pinion? Do you have a picture of the spur, maybe something else is interchangeable? On the OLD HPI belt cars, you could run just about any spur you wanted, but ThunderbirdJunkie is fairly well clueless when it comes to the modern shaft drive cars.
Nevermind, just looked.
It is THE EXACT SAME SPUR that came with the old belt-drive RS4s.
Try this and a 14t pinion:

Have you taken the temps when it does thermal? I know some people have had this problem aand have had to send it back to novak to flash program the esc to fix the thermals.

one thing you can try is to turn your drag brake to zero, the punch control to one and the throttle to Expo instead of linear. Should bring the temps down abit.

Just thought of something else. Double check the clearance around the spur for extra room before you go putting bigger spurs on

Let me clarify, when I say painfully slow, I don't mean slow, I mean far slower than a system like this would be expected to go. I don't want to gear it down any more.
I'm looking at either going 2S or replacing the stator with a 10.5T, any comments or recommendations?

it may not be that your over geared but as thunderbirdjunkie said you may be under geared. Try running a smaller spur gear or a larger pinion.
Its probably over revving and getting heated up too easily.
Electric motors need a load on them.

RE: Havoc 3S with Ballistic 8.5T won't stop overheating
I was running a 18/87 on my SC10 on 2S with an 8.5t. Now with that buggy I would bet you're overgeared since you're running 16/84 at 1/2 again more voltage. Knock a few teeth off the pinion or get a larger spur.
But, just noticed you said it's painfully slow........so I'm confused. Any vehicle operating smoothly (no binding anywhere) should not be running painfully slow with an 8.5t on 3S. Something is wrong........and probably not necessarily your gearing.

Ok hold on.
Overgeared, in ThunderbirdJunkie's language, means too much gear.
IE too big pinion/too small spur
Undergeared would be too small pinion/too big spur.
You guys are talking opposite and it is frying his simple mind.

LOL Thunderbird you're contradicting your thinking in this thread and I'm getting confused now. Just had to actually type in the definition of undergeared on www.google.com

No, ThunderbirdJunkie confused ThunderbirdJunkie in his first line in Post #6...."it definitely sounds like you're under-geared. There are no bigger spur options so you can drop to a smaller pinion" [sm=lol.gif]

He is not over or under geared he said the motor and ecs. aren't that warm when shutting down. Sound more like a bad esc. Do yourself a favor and get a mamba max pro esc.

RE: Havoc 3S with Ballistic 8.5T won't stop overheating
i just got the ballistic 8.5t, but i'm using a novak gtb esc.
geared 22/78 on my b4 i ran for almost an hour straight on the local track, 2s 5000mah 35c at the end the motor was 150 degrees.
< firm beliver that 3s is overkill.
my friend just picked uop the havoc 3s like the op did, i'll give him a heads up. hopefully he doesn't have this issue.
