Yeah Racing Hackmoto V2 540 Brushed Motors

I searched RCU for anyone possibly using one of these motors. I've been all over the www looking at reviews. Some people hate them, and some love 'em. I think some of the issues with in the bad reviews is some people are using the wrong turn count for their platform, or trying to put too much voltage through the brushes. Oh, how much I would like to take some people back in time to the days of racing with 6 cell NiCd 1200/1400mah packs.
I picked up one of Yeah Racing's Hackmoto V2 17T motors to try. Why did I choose to revert back to brushed motors? I have a lot of brushes from the late 90's that I felt needed used up. I mainly wanted to compare this 17T to my Reedy RADON 17T that's in my "RC10T4.29". Okay, I'll round up...my T4.3 :p. I love the speed from the Reedy 17T. It's not too fast of a motor, very controllable power most of the time when tires have proper traction. I'd compare it to the speed of a 13.5 brushless motor, but that Reedy motor runs pretty hot, and has me concerned I'll be without a motor shorty. |

The Yeah Racing Hackmoto 17T motor, hanging off the rear end of my T4.3, was running roughly 28° cooler than the Reedy motor. At the 10 minute mark, I had readings of 137°F~154°F depending where thermometer was pointed on the motor. The end bell bearing is where I got the hottest readings and the body of the motor is where I got the 137°F reading.
At the 20 minute mark, I was getting 170°-ish end bell readings. Trying to get traction with T4.3's stock tires and dry/rough track is an everyday occurrence for me in the backyard. I am running 87/16 gearing. Probably could get away with a larger pinion gear if I was only running the truck 10 minute intervals, but I'm very happy with the speeds with the 16T pinion. So far, so good. I really am liking this 17T brushed motor. If I had to compare it to a brushless motor, somewhere around the same speeds of a 13.5T or a 2850Kv~3000Kv motor. A 6/7 cell 3000mAh NiMh, or 2S LiPo (with around the same 3000mAh capacity) would be a perfect match for the Yeah Racing motor in an off-road 1/10 2wd platform. |
I keep telling myself, and from what I can remember, I've never had to run my brushed motors longer than 6 minutes back in the day. Nor did I have batteries with the capacity to run my RCs longer than 10 minutes. Nowadays, bashers want super-long run times. This just adds to the proper gearing needed to avoid heat issues.

I can't tell you how much I love the Hackmoto V2 17T motor. The 17T has spunk in it! I geared up my stadium truck with a few more teeth on the pinion gear, and it got my truck moving... too fast . I did have to quit running the motor around the 11 minute mark. Motor was super hot. I was laughing the whole time while trying to keep RC's rear end from coming completely around in the corners.
What are safe levels of heat for a brushed motor anyway? My Reedy RADON motor hit just above the 200°F mark at least once. I'm sure sure there were other times as well. I don't always take the thermometer with me to the track. I'm really surprised to see solder joints; gear cover and spur gear survived. This was the biggest reason for purchasing the Yeah Racing motor. I had to find out if all brushed motors run hot using the same gearing. |
I guess max temps all depends on what quality of magnets are used. After looking at some sites....my Reedy motor probably has some demagnetization/power loss going on. My 200°F readings could very well be from variations in emitted infrared energy on different metals/surfaces. I normally take temps at three different points of motor.
At the end of the day, the Hackmoto V2 motor just runs cooler. 'Nuff said. |

Thinking that I may have my stadium truck way under-geared, I put a larger pinion back on, and not good :p. After 10 minutes of running, 230°F at endbell bearing, 188°F on can, and 170°F on motor mount. Of course the outside temp being in the 90's did not help.
16 packs through this motor and for all the heat it has taken, the brushes, and comm look good so far. |
I'm sure the new tires played a roll in everything as well. Lots of grip...motor has to work harder...more heat.

Curious to see what kind of amperage this motor draws...

16 packs through this motor and for all the heat it has taken, the brushes, and comm look good so far. Went to a 19T pinion gear for a run and temps were just a hair better. I'll probably settle on an 18T pinion after it's all said and done. I just can't go back to running with the 15T pinion on the motor...just makes the truck too slow. |
My other thought was the shiny-ness of sticker, that's on the can, was fudging the temp readings of IR thermometer. My fingers are still useful in telling me something is hot, and something is super freakin' HOT, and the Hackmoto motor was stinking HOT. After adjusting the emissivity function on thermometer, temps were still showing 200+°F.
Once I feel the motor is causing spur gear to melt/weakening, the motor will be thrown in recycle bin. |
We are spoilt by the relative forgiveness of brushless. With brushed motors the gearing comes so precise. 1 tooth can be the difference between max-speed and meltdown.
I'm happy we're beyond that. Cutting comms, tweaking springs, cleaning huge amounts of carbon-dust from the endbells.. ugh! Having said that, I use the Hackmoto 27 and 21 turn in my re-release scorpions and javelins. Just for that " old time feeling" But all of them with the smallest pinion I can get in, to keep the heat in check, because I cannot get myself to re-use my 1500mah Sanyo Red packs (that still hold a charge after 2 decennia..they were GOOD! ).. Give me the runtime of a 4amp LiPo anytime.. :p Oh, and the higher winds are great for crawlers. I use the 35- and 55 turns. |
