Official Tamiya F350 High-Lift - Build Chronicles

Recently I gathered all the parts to build my Tamiya F350 High-Lift.

This thread will basically chronicle the progress, thought it'd be interesting to see how it goes. I'll try to keep it up to date as I get through the manual, but this one is a bigger kit than normal. It's gonna take a few evenings after work!

The beginning:

Not much to see yet, but I'll update later this evening with some progress.

Here are step 1 and step 2 in the assembly instructions. Then an image of how the gear mesh actually works.

The whole setup is pretty smart!

Very interesting, I'll be watching this thread because this is my next truck! I like the tires you have there, what kind of wheels are they mounted on? [8D] I see that there are ball bearings in the tranny... The rest of the truck uses bushings, correct?

Taking a break for tonight, the camera is out of batteries! I've got them in the charger, so I'll pick up the build tomorrow evening.

Thanks to everyone for the comments so far.

To answer the bushing question: The truck only includes bushings, I've purchased a full set of Rubber sealed bearings to install while assembling it.

Oh, I see. Good choice going with the bearings! Nice pictures too.

That's cool! I remember the old Bruiser 3-speed tranny was sealed w/ silicon and then filled the case w/ oil.. I guess they are not doing that anymore.. LOL!! That was really cool.. like a real car, ha ha ha!!

I plan to get this next, and I found some bearings on Ebay. Ill probably try out a couple motors on it. Tranny reminds me of me semi, but clean.

Cant wait to see it done!!!

RE: Tamiya F350 High-Lift - Build Chronicles

The Tranny gears have "Knight Hauler" printed on some of them, so it appears that this transmission is nearly a direct port of the Semi 3-speeds.

I'll be working more on this tonight, so "stay tuned" if you are interested in seeing some more of the build progress.

I'm pretty impressed with the kit so far. Its higher quality than some of the other Tamiya kit's I have assembled. Fasteners seem better quality too, don't strip as easily.
Overall, a cool project thus far. I recommend it to anyone.

---

One Note: The directions are a little convoluted in the beginning, but they seem to be better once you've completed the 3-speed transmission.

Which radio are you going to be using with this kit?! I think you told me before but I forgot.... which ESC? How about motor?

hunter306 11-09-2006 02:33 PM

RE: Tamiya F350 High-Lift - Build Chronicles

Radio: Modified Spektrum DX6
ESC : Novak XRS Reversible
Motor: Standard 540 Can - Until I get to test it, I think it's a safe bet

I've also got an Epic 19t, a Epic 27t Stock, and a few Speed Caliber 16t Motors to try if I need some more speed.

We'll see what happens!

man, your camera must be as cool as the truck itself.... i wish i can take pics of my stuff like this! i wonder if tamiya themselves have pics that are this kind of quality...

RE: Tamiya F350 High-Lift - Build Chronicles

The key to good pics are lighting!! I am sure Hunter probably got a light booth setup or something for those close-up shots!!

If you don't want to bother w/ those light tent, you can take pics outdoor during an overcast day.. they come out really well too.. you'd be surprised how good a pic the regular digital camera can take with proper light!!

Here's an example.. no special equipment, just took it when the sun is behind the cloud... :D

Man, all you guys w/ the 3-speed showing off!! [:@] hee hee..

RE: Tamiya F350 High-Lift - Build Chronicles

Thank you for the compliments! I've been experimenting with my camera these past 2 weeks so I wanted to try to document this build a little nicer.

The key really is a nice lighting setup. If you have lights, almost any decent camera can take good pics.
Mine are by no means spectacular, but they are a step above my previous build threads.

Anyway, home from work... so dinner... then build and picture time.

Yea, lighting is essential. I use a bounce flash on my external flash to take pics... :D Soft and no harsh lines. :D

Of course things start with a steady hand... :D I'm enjoying this thread (buildwise and picture wise. :D )

And macro is nice too... :p My lens cant do 1:1 though. :(
