Started to paint the interior last week! Still trying to find time to reassemble. I think that the dashboard is too glossy so will probably try to pick up some flat black or flat tan paint for it. Hopefully I can get some more done this week!

Hey thanks! I think it looks too clean and shiny for the interior of a rally car! Lol! I have a bit of flat clear left so I'm going to spray the floor pan and touch it up with some rust paint etc. Think I will try to give it a bit of a weathered look in the interior! Ha!
Also, when I painted the outside of the body, I forgot to mask the inside of the windows, so there's a bit of overspray on the front door windows. So considering cutting the windows a bit so it looks like its rolled down about 3/4 of the way down.

Hey thanks JBLKing! Been trying to get back to this over the last couple of weeks. Ordered some flat paint and detailing brushes, so just waiting for those to come in. Also been considering a brushless motor swap and some 3s lipos....lol! Lighter motor with 3s lipo should provide some serious punch!! Not to mention some decent slides!
Gonna try to get some vid of it running in the dirt this weekend! Won't have the brushless as yet, just the tamiya silver can and regular nimh batteries!

Looking forward to it! It will pull insane wheelies with that motor in or insane slides when you are on dirt!
Until I do an actual thread for mine, here are a couple teaser shots of my rear suspension setup progress. I will refrain from posting too much of it but as this is kind of the RWD home made entusiasts thread I will post just a few
I got the two 4 links brackets made, and also an additional L shaped bracket that bolts under the diff. It makes for a centered pivot mounting point in the rear of the axle. This is where the Watts linkage is connected to locate the axle laterally. Otherwise, the axle would just swing sideways as the 4 links are all parallel to each other.
Here is a small video I made to test the concept of the watts linkage. I'll have to shorten the links a little so the fit inboard without touching the tires (when I put the wide 31mm wheels and tires). Cant seem to be able to get a thumbnail of the video so here is the link:

WOW! Nice work Frederick! What tires (31mm) are you using? And wheels?

Definitely going to switch to brushless, should have done so initially but was a bit worried about how the tranny will stand up to it. But I think it will once the gear mesh is set properly!

Looking forward to see your build progress, so start up a thread if you have the time and post a link to it here! I will definitely be following along!
Ohh....... Did I say the rear suspension looks freaking awesome!! Sweet !

Thanks a bunch! Yes when I have some time I will work on the thread. Meanwhile I am taking pictures of the process. I have just received the Tamiya Sport Tuned black motor, but still waiting for the small airplane gearbox.

I am using Tamiya 2 piece wheels (tamiya part number 50673), they have adjustable offset depending on which side you mount the center part of the wheel to the wheel "cylinder". Here is the 31mm wheel assembled for +10mm offset (much too wide for our bodies).

If you mount it the other way around, it gives +2mm offset instead, pretty much like a standard wheel, so the added width is towards the inside. The white part becomes more flush with the rim. It would be neat to have a narrower axle and be able to use the wheels at high offset though! But it wont work with our axles. I have also the front matching wheels, in normal width, adjustable between +2 or +4mm offset.

See here mounted on my TB-01 chassis, in +2mm offset mode:

Tires are HPI 31mm rear and 26mm front, but I do not recall the part number.

Hey that's pretty cool! Wasn't aware that they made the wheels that way (adjustable)! Will definitely have a look at them for a bud I'm planning for next winter! I have. A tamiya hornet NIB that I will like use as a base for an old school roadster or ratrod!
Nice TB01 btw! Looks immaculate!

Sounds like a nice project!

Make sure to look at the HPI vintage wheels and tires too, they come in 31 and 26 mm width too, and offsets of I believe up to 6mm. That is not as much offset and deep dish look as the tamiya +10mm, but they look more vintage because of the taller sidewall and vintage thread. Also the different wheel designs they have look more vintage and hot-rod like (five spoke cragar style, steelies style, escort mk-2 style, nascar style, and in different finishes). Have a look on ebay for hpi vintage wheels tires and you'll see!

Actually, I initially picked up the HPI vintage wheels for my escort build, but wanted to use the perelli rally tires as well. Unfortunately I found out too late that the wheels were designed for the vintage tires like in your pic! The tires fit but just didn't look right as they didn't come all the way down the side of the rim. So I decided to go with the gold plated rims instead !
I think I will eventually pick up the vintage tires for the rims and will also consider picking up the 31mm as well !

Ha! I seem to be collecting projects faster than I could work or even start them.....[:@]

Got a little more done!
Re-painted the dash and installed the steering wheel assembly as well as the instrument panel!

How many coats did you do? And for bodies?

On the bodies I usually do 3-4 coats. But that's after I apply a first light mist coat on the body ( this helps eliminates the paint running). Once I apply the mist coat I use a hair dryer to dry it for a a couple of minutes, then I apply the 3-4 light to medium coats using the hair dryer in between coats to dry the paint. Just painting alone takes about 1 hour. Then I let it sit for a couple of hours before removing any masks etc. then I let the body sit for a couple of days before handling or driving so the paint can harden properly!
For the dashboard and interior I just primed and applied a couple of coats.

Hey Preston! I bet it will be easier to drift the car if you can find the locking gear for the diff. When I bought my axle (same as yours) on ebay there was a locking gear that came with it, you replace one of the gear in the diff by this semi-square gear, and it blocks the diff, in a reversible way.

Keep posting! Can't wait to see the dirt vids!
